Unless you’ve been somewhere very remote this last fortnight, you’ll have caught at least the edges of the online uproar over what Macklemore said at an Ed Sheeran concert, what Pink said about what Macklemore said, what the billionaire stadium owner said about it all, and what Ed Sheeran didn’t say until after everyone else had spoken, and what the whole of the internet had to say about all of it, as people sorted themselves into the right side and the wrong side and set fire to whoever’s left over.

At a glance, this might read like just another celebrity story, but crack the surface and it's a political one, about a war and about who's allowed to say what. Look up, and it's a story about the end of an age, about love, and about how badly most of us were taught to recognise it.

If you’ve missed the story that’s set the internet ablaze this week, we'll unpack it all below, then look at the sky, because the charts of the four people at the centre of this are linked in a way that's quietly profound.

And then we'll step back, because what's happening to Ed Sheeran and Macklemore and Pink right now is a small, loud, public version of something happening to all of us, under a changing sky that's teaching us that love was always more than peace.

Sometimes, love is fire.

Taking a Stand

In the first week of September, Macklemore walked out onto the stage at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, opening for Ed Sheeran, and told a stadium full of people he’d joined the tour "so I can stand up in stadiums like this and say two words that are very near and dear to my heart: Free Palestine.

“I want those words to be loud and clear,” he said, “so that people all the way in Gaza to the occupied West Bank know that we have not forgotten about them.”

“To all of my Jewish brothers and sisters,” Macklemore said, “criticism of Israel, criticism of apartheid, being against genocide in no way is a criticism of you. My message is for peace; love for all human beings to be treated with dignity, respect, and equality….So I say free Palestine, I say free Lebanon, I say free Cuba, I say free Congo, free Sudan, I say free all people in America living in fear of this terrorist organization, ICE. None of us will be free until we are all free.”

His speech and the song that accompanied it was met with cheers from the crowd, while others reportedly walked out during his performance. That weekend, Pink re-shared a post by the StopAntisemitism account, accusing Macklemore of ambushing fans at Sheeran’s concert with “anti-Israel propaganda” and saying he had “accused Israel of a false ‘genocide.'” The post called for Macklemore to issue an apology and for ticket-holders to be refunded.

Pink’s reshare drew fire on the internet, so she made her own post, saying “A repost isn’t a statement, and a meme isn’t a spine. Social media makes all of us cheap and fast, and we all know it.”

“I was born a Jew,” she explained, clarifying that she has never spoken for “Israel, or for any government” and that she still believes “Hamas is a terrorist organization. Palestinians deserve a future that honors their humanity and their aspirations. Protecting innocent life comes first, everywhere, and nobody should ever celebrate the death of a child. Anybody’s child.”

She made mention of an incident in 2014 when Macklemore turned up to a surprise show in Seattle in a black wig, fake beard and a big prosthetic nose, and was accused of dressing as a Jewish caricature. Macklemore said at the time that a Jewish stereotype never crossed his mind and apologised. The Anti-Defamation League accepted his apology, but many still saw the costume as antisemitic.

“I let it go, because that’s what we do. We let it go,” Pink wrote. “Then last weekend he stood in front of a stadium full of music-loving families, with violent images from a war on the screens, dedicated a song to the movement of his choice, and then took the mic to tell all of the Jews in the stadium that it wasn’t about them. You don’t get to decide that for us.”

“That’s what prompted my repost,” Pink explained. “Not ‘Free Palestine,’ and not anyone’s right to say it. I have never asked for another artist to be silenced and I’m not asking now. I don’t need anyone fired, and I don’t need a refund. What I need is to be able to say, as a Jewish mom, ‘that scared me, and it scared people I love,’ without being told our fear is just propaganda, and without being told I’m somehow cool with genocide because I noticed?”

This week, Macklemore posted that he’d been dropped from Ed Sheeran’s tour. According to his post, “Last Monday, in the middle of all the media attention surrounding Pink and what I said at MetLife, Ed told me that Robert Kraft called him. We were scheduled to play Gillette Stadium later this month, which is owned by the Kraft Group. Ed told me that Kraft said I would not be allowed to perform in his stadium. Ed also told me that Kraft had rallied some of the other stadium owners and collectively they gave him an ultimatum: if Macklemore stays on the tour, you will not be allowed to play in our venues.”

"He told me that the words ‘Free Palestine’ and the image of the Palestinian flag were hurtful to a lot of people he spoke with," Macklemore continued. "I told him that if those words were more offensive than tens of thousands of Palestinian children being killed by Israel, then there was a fundamental disconnect between where those people stood and where I stood. But he couldn’t get past his public facing, ‘I don’t take sides.’"

Macklemore called Sheeran a brother of 13 years who’d been put in an impossible position. “Taking a side can cost you,” he wrote, “….but there is no neutral position between the oppressor and the oppressed. When one side has the bombs and bottomless financial and military support from America, refusing to take a side doesn’t leave you in the middle.”

Robert Kraft, in his own statement, confirmed he made the decision to bar Macklemore from performing at Gillette, saying it was based on his “recent actions, material shared from the stage during Ed Sheeran’s shows in New Jersey, and a broader history of antisemitic rhetoric and imagery that we believe has been deeply offensive and hurtful to the Jewish community.”

Controversy around Macklemore’s ousting swirled online for a full day before Sheeran released a post of his own, explaining that he is “appalled by the conflict between Israel and Palestine” and that “the suffering and pain caused on both sides is a human tragedy.” He explained that it was the promoter’s decision to axe Macklemore, not his, and that he’d spent the week talking to the venues, to Kraft, to the promoter, to activists on both sides, trying to build a bridge, but was unable to. He wouldn’t let down fans who’d made plans, he wrote, and he wouldn’t abandon the crew and the support acts and the musicians who rely on him to make a living.

“I have always used my platform and music to bring people from all backgrounds and cultures together,” Sheeran wrote. “Those who have been to one of my shows will know that they are about unity, joy, escapism, love, and a place for everyone to feel welcome.”

“There is a reason I do not use my professional platform for politics,” Sheeran explained. “My audience includes young people, often children, of all backgrounds. Those who come to my shows do not expect a political forum….I choose to use my fame and platform to be a place of safety and sanctuary, to maintain diplomacy and keep conversations open, not closed. If we only focus on shouting the loudest, nothing will ever change.”

“I am not complicit,” he wrote. “Just because I choose not to speak publicly, it doesn’t mean I don’t have opinions.”

Within hours, four of the acts that Sheeran said in his post he would not abandon had abandoned him - Aaron Rowe and Lukas Graham, who’d been slotted in to replace Macklemore, Finneas, who was booked for the South American leg, and Beoga, the Irish trad band who play the Galway Girl stretch of the show, all withdrew citing concerns over silencing political speech and expressing support for Palestinians.

That’s the story as it stands right now, though it still seems to be evolving, and the sky suggest there’s definitely more to come.

The Story in the Sky

While all of this has been playing out in stadiums and across the internet this month, the sky above has been mirroring the firestorm, but also giving it some context - speaking to the deeper layer running underneath it all.

Ed Sheeran was born with his Venus in Pisces - the planet of love in the sign of compassion and harmony, so no wonder he’s the man who writes the wedding songs, who says his job is unity, joy, escapism, and love. But sitting at a hard angle to that Venus is a point called Lilith, which in a chart marks the part of us we’ve exiled, the voice we learned to banish so we’d be allowed to stay. Ed’s Lilith is in Sagittarius - the sign of conviction - so he’s a man whose enormous capacity for harmony is built directly on top of a buried, outspoken conviction that he keeps mostly hidden.

Macklemore was born with his Mars - his drive and his fight, his way of acting in the world - parked precisely on that fault line in Ed’s chart. He’s the exiled voice, walked back in through the stage door. Their Suns sit in a lovely easy angle to each other, which is the brotherhood, and the 13 years - making him not so much Ed’s enemy, as Ed’s missing piece.

Robert Kraft’s Neptune - the planet of fog and dissolving - sits on the same fault line from the other side, directly opposite Ed’s Venus. And Kraft’s Lilith is in Taurus - the sign of property and ownership - at a hard angle to Macklemore’s Lilith in Aquarius - the sign of the collective and the cause. These two were always going to collide over exactly this.

Pink turns out to be standing on the same spot as everyone else. Her Mars - her fight - sits in Cancer, the sign of the tribe, right beside Ed's wound, Kraft's wound and Macklemore's rising sign. All four have something planted in the same few degrees of the sky.

This week, as Macklemore posted, Lilith herself crossed into Capricorn - the sign of the stadium owners and the promoters and the institutions - while Mars sat on Ed’s Chiron, his oldest wound, in Cancer, the sign of the tribe, the crew, the family he’d never abandon. And then he watched that tribe walk out the door.

That’s the story playing out in the charts of the main players this month, but there’s an even deeper story that involves all of us, and it’s a story about love, written in fire.

Love Under Fire

For the last fourteen years, Neptune - the planet of the collective dream - has been moving through Pisces, the sign of the ocean. Neptune in Pisces was the era when love meant compassion, oneness, everyone welcome, no sides, and that was the era that made Ed Sheeran; he released his first single the very year Neptune entered Pisces, and his whole career has been the soundtrack to it. Unity, joy, escapism, love, a place for everyone to feel welcome - that was the collective dream of love for the last fourteen years, and a lot of good came from it…

But now the sky has changed.

Last year Neptune moved into Aries, where it met Saturn in February for the Genesis Reset, which planted the seed of a new age right on top of the old one, and where Neptune will stay until the late 2030s. Aries is fire - the place where things begin by being said out loud, and what Neptune in Aries is doing, slowly and then all at once, is changing the collective dream of what love is.

Most of us grew up understanding love to mean peace, kindness, serenity, harmony, and everybody getting along - the kind of things Ed Sheeran mentioned in his post this week, that he strives for in all his concerts. Love can absolutely be all those things, but at its core, love is truth, and truth isn’t always peaceful, or serene, or harmonious, or even particularly kind. Truth is like fire - sometimes it’s a small fire we can warm our hands by, but sometimes it’s a wildfire that burns the forest down, and the house, and everything in its path. If love is truth, and truth is fire, then sometimes love burns.

That kind of burning truth is the kind most of us like to suppress, and it’s understandable, because most of us would prefer to live in a house where the curtains aren’t on fire. We suppress it for the sake of harmony, and we call the harmony love, and then we bend over backwards trying to maintain that harmony by suppressing the fiery truth, which is actually just suppressing love.

If truth is love, then truth suppressed can never be love, no matter how peaceful, or kind, or serene it is. It’s not actually loving to maintain peacefulness at the expense of the truth - it’s holding back love to maintain the illusion of it. Neptune in Aries will be having none of that.

Truth is like a fire that can’t be put out, and no matter how much we suppress it, it just burns down below, and when we suppress it in our bodies, we feel it as a bubbling anger, deep in our belly where we hid it. That fire never goes out, it just burns wherever we shoved it, and we carry it around as unexpressed anger that most of us believe we can’t express because to do so would be wrong. Anger isn’t very loving, or so we’re told.

But truth long suppressed is a fire that burns as anger.
Anger, very often, is love that’s been told to sit down.

What’s playing out now, in stadiums and in celebrity posts and in the comments underneath them, is truth long suppressed finding its way up and out, burning through everything, even the things we love. While Neptune was in Pisces we could maintain harmony by not saying the thing, but with Neptune now in Aries, the thing is demanding to be said, everywhere, by everyone, all at once. And that’s what this story is, and this month is, and this year and the coming decade is - it’s the ocean catching fire.

The Fate of the Fire

Fire has three fates. We can throw it, and something burns, or we can bury it, and it smoulders underground for years and we feel it as anger we can’t explain. Or we can hold it, and feel the heat of it in our chest or our throat or our belly, and let it be there, burning, and neither fling it at the nearest villain nor shove it back down into the dark. Held fire is the one that warms, like the campfire, but it’s also the hardest of the three, because the mind, pressed up against the wall of its limits, only knows how to throw or bury.

Holding fire is something that only the heart does.

Most of us are no good at holding fire yet, and that’s the point. The age we’ve just entered is the one where we learn, and the sky is going to keep handing us fire until we do. Not to punish us, or to make our life an utter misery, but to teach us that we can hold it, and show us what we’re capable of once we do.

Right now a lot of us are feeling the fire and flinging it at the nearest perceived enemy - the internet is ablaze with people hurling the fire they’ve been holding back in every direction this week. We’ll see a lot more of that before we learn how to hold what’s rising, as the fire of love and truth long suppressed finally comes up and out.

Rather than set the whole world on fire, when we feel that fire rising within us, we can pause a moment to just feel where it lives within us, and ask what it’s there for. Because not all anger is love. Some of it’s fear that’s found a louder voice. Some of it’s the ego, bruised and looking for someone to blame. Some of it’s just the pleasure of the burning, and if we’re honest we’ve all felt that one too. Fear wears the face of fury, and fury feels righteous from the inside no matter what’s underneath it, which is exactly why the internet is what it is at the moment - everyone on it is certain their fire is the good kind.

The heat of the fire tells us nothing, because fire’s always hot. The question is what it's protecting. If we sit with it a moment and find, underneath the heat, something or someone we love - a child, a people, a truth we can’t unsee - then that’s love we’re feeling, and it’s allowed to be hot, and it’s allowed to be said. If we sit with it and find only that we want someone to hurt, or to be wrong, or to go away, then we’ve found fear wearing love’s clothes, and the kindest thing we can do is pause a little longer and let it show us what it’s actually afraid of.

Neither answer is a failure, but taking time to hold the fire and listen before we decide what to do with it takes practice. The fire that is love gets to be spoken, carefully, in the open. The fire that’s fury masking fear gets to be held until it cools enough to tell us the truth. And the whole purpose of this age we’re walking into will be us learning the difference by feel.

Love is what the fire is for.

And so dawns the Age of the Heart.

This week, for the first time in nine years, the exile arrives at the establishment’s door, spilling the secrets of our institutions.

Black Moon Lilith is a point in our sky that in myth represents the first woman, the one who refused an arrangement she never consented to, and was cast out and demonised so that nobody would ever listen to what she knew. This week, she enters Capricorn - the sign of the establishment: governments, corporations, courts, parties, dynasties, reputations - and stays for nine months, and to get a taste of what she’s here to do, we only need look back at what she’s done in Capricorn before.

This is the transit that delivered the Wall Street Crash in 1929, Rosa Parks’ refusal in 1955, the Watergate tapes in 1973, the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, and Bernie Madoff’s two sets of books in 2009, and oversaw the downfall of Harvey Weinstein and the rise of the MeToo movement in 2018. Every nine years, on schedule, she makes the world’s buried records speak.

And she’s already begun her work. Last week, with Lilith standing at the very last degree of Sagittarius, the truth-teller’s sign - the exact place she stood when the Weinstein story broke - a researcher resigned from Anthropic and told 70 million people that the AI industry is “gambling with our lives.” Right on schedule, the lone voice has spoken, and Lilith’s nine months calling up what’s been buried starts now, and the list of who and what she’s coming for is long.

She opens, this very week, on the chart of Ghislaine Maxwell. Before October is out she’s touched Mark Zuckerberg, Stephen Miller, Justin Baldoni and Blake Lively, Pam Bondi, Todd Blanche, Sam Altman, OpenAI, Mossad and the Russian Federation. November and December bring Elon Musk, then Donald Trump and Bill Clinton, along with a three-way alignment between Russia, Ukraine and Britain.

This was the week the buried things came up out of the ground - files nobody was supposed to find, stories nobody was supposed to tell, and questions nobody was supposed to ask, all rising from the rubble of the collapsing tower of power, twenty-five years after the dust first filled the air.

In the days leading up to the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani released a raft of documents that showed city officials knew the air was poisoned with asbestos in the weeks after the towers fell while they were telling New Yorkers the air was safe. Illnesses from that air have now killed more people than the planes and the towers did.

While Mamdani was unveiling long buried truth in New York, Trump was in Washington conjuring stories of being carried out of a creaking building near Ground Zero by two firemen who “grabbed me under the arm” and “literally lifted me up”, and about the crew of construction workers he brought downtown to help. Fact-checkers found no evidence for any of it - Trump was in midtown on the morning of the attacks, and his own nephew, Fred Trump, broke a long silence to say the only crew his uncle could have sent “would have been secretarial and accounting employees from Trump Tower.” The whole thing appears to be a complete fantasy.

When all four living former presidents gathered at Ground Zero on Friday to observe the anniversary, Trump skipped the ceremony - reportedly after being refused a microphone at an event no politician has been permitted to speak at since 2012 - and turned up instead at the Pentagon, where he was allowed to speak, and used the moment to tie his war on Iran to the attacks, while Pete Hegseth went even further, saying “We're still sending terrorists where they belong - to hell. And tankers to the bottom of the ocean where they belong…..We control the Strait. We will finish this fight.”

But America doesn’t control the Strait - far from it. It’s been essentially closed for months, under the control of Iran, and this week the Houthis - Iran's proxy in Yemen - seized the port of Mocha and the Red Sea coast near the Bab el-Mandeb strait, the chokepoint the Saudis had been using to get their oil out since Hormuz closed. “Everything that was under our control on the western coast has fallen,” a Yemeni officer said this week, as Saudi Arabia shut down the pipeline that carries its oil across the peninsula after its pumping stations were hit. Iran now has a grip on both sea lanes through which the Middle East's oil reaches the world, sending prices through the roof across the globe.

In America, oil hit $110 a barrel, and diesel passed $6 a gallon for the first time in history, and since diesel is the fuel that moves the trucks and the trains and the tractors, that number will end up in the price of groceries by Christmas. In response to the crisis of his own making, Trump floated renaming Hormuz the “Trump Strait,” called the war “small potatoes,” and said it would end “immediately” after the midterms, even while his own advisers have reportedly warned him it could run for the rest of his term.

Canada’s counter-tariffs on $20 billion of American goods took effect this week, and Prime Minister Mark Carney used the day to lay out a plan to unhook the Canadian economy from the American one and deepen ties with Europe instead. Trump answered with a ban on selling Canadian jets and Canadian goods in government purchasing, and new bans on Canadian dairy, alcohol and motorcycles from the end of the month. Carney’s approval rating is over 70%, while Trump’s is in the toilet, which might be why half the seats in the arena were empty when he held a Republican convention this week to stir up support ahead of the looming midterms.

At the event, while Ted Cruz was on stage talking about Zohran Mamdani and two Democratic Senate candidates, a man in the crowd shouted “he should be shot!” three times, and Cruz carried on without a flicker. The same night, three Epstein survivors and the journalist who'd brought them in, all carrying press credentials, were escorted out of the arena minutes after she asked a Republican candidate about the files. It was the same week that the Washington Post confirmed that Norway, Poland, Latvia and Britain have all sent formal requests to the US Justice Department for access to the Epstein files, and none of them has had an answer, while in Congress, Thomas Massie’s petition to force a vote on the withheld files passed 100 signatures.

Trump had the crowd at his Trumpapalooza raise their right hands and repeat after him, saying "I pledge to the greatest president in the history of the United States, that loves us so much he can't even breathe, that I will go out with my family, my friends…I don't care if I'm registered or not, I'm gonna try and cheat like hell like they do….and we are going to vote on November 3rd." Then he told the crowd that if they don’t vote, they’ll go to hell.

Trump also said that every American adult would get $5,000 if Republicans won the midterms - the party that’s staunchly against handouts offered what former Freedom Caucus chair Bob Good called the kind of socialist scheme Republicans accuse Democrats of. The “Trump Dividend,” thanks to “our tremendous strength and success economically,” would cost $1.2 trillion at a time when the US national debt has just reached $40 trillion - when Fox News asked why, given Republicans already hold both chambers, he can’t just pay it now, Trump said: “Because the Democrats can’t do it. Because with them it’s negative growth.” Whatever that means.

In Missouri, where Republicans redrew the congressional map last year at Trump's behest to carve up a Democratic seat, the state's own Supreme Court ruled the new map can't be used. Twice this week the US Supreme Court refused to overrule it, so Missouri will vote in November on its old lines, except that it already ran its August primaries on the new ones, and nobody yet knows how that gets unwound with the election barely fifty days away. The courts also spent the week blocking Trump's order to have the US Postal Service reject mail ballots, an appeals panel finding “no record evidence of past fraud” behind it, while the Justice Department went to the Supreme Court a third time to try and get it back.

Overseas, Trump’s no more popular than he is at home. When he touched down in Ireland for a golf trip this weekend, thousands marched through Dublin chanting “Donald Trump not welcome here,” pointing to Gaza, the war with Iran and rising costs. Then he put his foot right in the oldest argument in the country by saying he'd “love to see” Northern Ireland leave the United Kingdom and unite with the Republic, a question that fuelled thirty years of bombings and killings until the 1998 peace deal left it to the people of the North alone to decide. It seems almost every time he opens his mouth these days he triggers some kind of international incident.

Elon Musk seems to have a similar problem, tweeting his congratulations when the far-right AfD took 44% of the vote in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt - the biggest result for a nativist party since the Nazi era, on a manifesto built around mass deportation. Viktor Orbán chimed in too, posting “Buckle up. This is just the beginning.” Tens of thousands marched against it in Berlin and a dozen other cities, as something long thought buried reared its head in a week when that was happening everywhere.

As the buried things are coming up, the people at the top of the tower are doing what all rulers do when the ground starts moving under them, turning up the fear and handing out enemies, with pledges to cheat like hell, and hell itself for anyone who doesn’t fall in line. “Buckle up, this is just the beginning,” is right, but the beginning of what exactly? The sky says what’s actually beginning won’t please those in power.

A quarter of a century ago when we were asked to hold the unfathomable, the world responded in fear and fury, and now we’re drowning in it. This week, we were asked to hold that same weight again, in a story as tall as a tower and as small as a courtroom - at Ground Zero, in Massachusetts at the close of a mother's murder trial, and everywhere in between - and a different response began to emerge, to a question that's been waiting twenty-five years for a heartfelt answer, ever since the morning fear filled the air and the whole world breathed it in: what do we do with a thing too terrible to hold?

Out of the Blue

It was a Tuesday morning in New York on the last warm week of summer, and the sky was clear, blue, and cloudless as kids made their way off to school, and commuters bustled through the streets and subways on their way to work. Out of that picturesque sky came a passenger jet - American Airlines Flight 11 - flying low among the buildings. Two flight attendants on that plane had called the airline from within the plane to report that it had been hijacked and that people in business class had been stabbed.

“Something is wrong. We are in a rapid descent. We are all over the place,” flight attendant Madeline “Amy” Sweeney told the airline's flight services office in Boston. “I see water. I see buildings….We are flying low….Oh my God, we are way too low.” And then, at 8.46am, the plane hurtled like a torpedo into the North Tower of the World Trade Center, in a burst of fire and flame.

People on the streets below heard the sound and looked up to see a mighty hole in the side of the building with smoke pouring out of it, but didn’t know what caused it. For seventeen minutes the whole city and, soon enough, the whole world looked up at that gaping, burning hole, trying to make it make sense.

Then, a second plane - United Airlines Flight 175 - came in low across the harbour, carrying passengers who were calling their loved ones from onboard to say their goodbyes. “I’m on an airplane that’s been hijacked,” Brian Sweeney said in a voicemail he left for his wife. “If things don't go well, and it's not looking good, I just want you to know I absolutely love you. I want you to do good, go have good times. Same to my parents and everybody. And I just totally love you, and I'll see you when you get there. Bye, babe. I hope I call you.”

At 9.03, that plane slammed into the South Tower, with news stations worldwide beaming the footage live. As New Yorkers filled the streets, smoke filled the sky, and the footage filled the airwaves, the unfolding reality slowly sank in across the globe, all at once. This was an attack. There had been people in those planes. There were people in those buildings. How do you put out a fire that’s a thousand feet in the sky? How do you rescue civilians trapped in a burning building with the wreckage of a Boeing 767 and its fuel burning inside it?

And then the people started to fall.

Above the fire in the North Tower, more than 1,300 people were trapped on floors where the stairwells were gone and the heat had passed a thousand degrees, and with the smoke behind them and the windows in front of them, they began to come out of the building. Somewhere around 200 people fell or jumped that morning, nearly all of them from the North Tower; some alone, some holding hands, hitting the ground at around 150 miles an hour. The cameras caught it live in the moment, though these days the footage is rarely shown - it’s simply too horrific to behold.

On the street below, the crowd moaned each time another body came down from the sky, and many reported hearing the sound of falling concrete until they understood what it was. The first firefighter to die on that day was struck and killed by a person falling from the South Tower. Nobody has ever been able to say for certain who fell, and the medical examiner ruled every death that morning a homicide, because in the words of one fire marshal, this should never be thought of as a choice.

Just before 9.40am, images emerged of the Pentagon on fire after a third airliner - American Airlines Flight 77 - went into the building, and the attack on New York became an attack on the country, and every aircraft in American airspace was ordered to the ground for the first time in history.

Soon, word spread that a fourth plane - United Airlines Flight 93 - was still up in the sky somewhere over Pennsylvania, hijacked, just like the others. Tom Burnett rang his wife Deena from that flight and told her a group of them were going to do something, and Jeremy Glick spoke to his wife Lyzbeth for a long time and asked whether he should fight. Mark Bingham rang his mother. Flight attendant CeeCee Lyles left her husband a message telling him she loved him and to tell the children. And Todd Beamer, unable to get through to his wife, spoke for thirteen minutes to a phone operator named Lisa Jefferson, said the Lord's Prayer with her, and was heard to say "let's roll" before the line went quiet.

At 9.59am, the South Tower of the World Trade Center came down, minutes before United Airlines Flight 93 crashed into a field near Shanksville, its passengers having fought the hijackers for the cockpit rather than let it reach Washington, where its destination was most likely the Capitol or the White House.

And by 10.28am, the North Tower followed the South, and descended to the ground.

The Air We’ve Been Breathing

The towers that fell that day didn’t fall over so much as they fell through themselves, and out of the bottom of them came a wall of dust that rolled up the streets of lower Manhattan faster than people could run, swallowing whole blocks and turning the morning black, and then settling, inches deep, on absolutely everything. On the cars and the awnings and the windowsills, and in the lungs of everyone who’d been on those streets. It was the pulverised remains of two 110-storey buildings - concrete, glass, steel, and every fireproofed beam and floor tile that had been sprayed with asbestos when they went up in the 60s and 70s - and it hung in the air over the city for weeks.

Nearly 3,000 people died in those planes and those towers that morning. Within hours, thousands more were climbing into the rubble to look for them.

Firefighters who’d lost 343 of their own that day dug for the ones still under the mangled pile of burning steel and cement. Police, paramedics, ironworkers, volunteers who’d driven in from other states, office workers who’d simply walked back downtown to help - they all worked in bucket lines, passing debris hand to hand, day and night, for weeks that turned into months, as the fires under the pile burned until December. Most of them wore paper masks, or nothing, while residents who lived in buildings nearby were told they could go home, and were advised to open the windows and wipe the dust off the sills with a wet rag.

A week after the attacks the head of the Environmental Protection Agency told the country the air in lower Manhattan was safe to breathe, and the city’s own health officials testified there were no elevated levels of asbestos indoors. The message, from the top, was that the danger in New York was over and that the ongoing threat was in caves on the other side of the world.

The day after the attacks NATO invoked its mutual defence clause for the first time in its history, and the world rallied to stand alongside America against the enemy that was "over there." Within days the nation’s fear had been given a face - Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda, sheltered by the Taliban in Afghanistan - and within four weeks American bombs were falling on Kabul. Eighteen months later the same fear was pointed at Iraq, a country that had nothing to do with the planes, and the war that started as a manhunt became a war on the whole region.

There’s no question that al-Qaeda was a very real enemy that posed an actual threat, but in the scramble to find someone to blame, the thing the attacks had let loose on America itself went unlooked at. To take the war to Iraq, Washington produced evidence of weapons of mass destruction that turned out never to have existed, while the evidence of a danger that did exist was quietly filed away. The most immediate danger was in the rubble and in the air, in the form of asbestos, lead, mercury, pulverised glass, and the smoke from a fire that wouldn't go out. The people digging were breathing it twelve hours a day, and the people who'd gone home were breathing it in their kitchens, and they've been dying from it ever since, in far greater numbers than died on the day.

This week, twenty-five years after the towers came down, the Mayor of New York, Zohran Mamdani, released 170,000 pages of city documents that show officials knew the asbestos was everywhere, and knew it was a threat, while they were telling the public it was fine. The city had spent years insisting the records didn't exist, but just last year, 68 boxes turned up in a municipal office, and inside them was a letter from the city's own lawyers ordering that the files be preserved as evidence for the lawsuits they expected.

There's a memo from October 2001 to the Deputy Mayor about how to limit the city's liability for toxic exposure, and one from February 2002, from a special adviser to the mayor, conceding "at least a low level of asbestos in the dust in many buildings in lower Manhattan" and recommending that "we should discontinue telling people to clean their apartments with wet mops and rags," because a congressman's questions risked "major public relations problems" and a "barrage of lawsuits." It's all there in the documents finally released this week. They knew, and they said the opposite, and they ordered the proof kept and then said it didn't exist, and it stayed buried for a quarter of a century while the air killed more people than the planes and the buildings ever did.

We were told the threat was over there - in the caves, then in the deserts, in weapons that were never there at all - and we marched off to war with it for twenty years, killing hundreds of thousands of people who'd had nothing to do with the planes, when all along the thing that would kill more Americans than the attacks themselves was right here where we live. It was invisible, and it was slow, just like the fear that set in that day, seeping into just about everything, settling just about everywhere. We all breathed it in, wherever on earth we were standing, and it’s been killing us slowly ever since.

The people in charge told us it was safe and healthy - that it was right to follow that fear into fury, and funnel that fury into fortification against whatever it was we were afraid of. And so we started building walls - first it was walls at airport security, so no plane could ever be hijacked again, and then it was walls of surveillance, to find the enemy on home soil. There were walls to keep out Muslims, and then the Mexicans, and then it was walls between red and blue, between every us and every them, right down to the them that lives next door.

In twenty-five years we built a whole architecture out of fear, so that we’d never have to feel it directly again; the queue at the airport, the camera on the corner, the database, the watch list, the two-decade war. And the fear itself got buried, the way the asbestos did, under a story about heroes and villains, and us and them, so nobody would ever have to open the box and look at what was actually in there.

The literal dust and the fear are the same substance in every way that matters.

Both were in the rubble that morning.
Both were breathed in by millions.
Both were declared safe by authority.
Both took decades to kill.
And both have now killed more people than the day itself.

The health system in New York is still caring for the people who breathed the first one, but nobody’s been caring for the people who breathed the second, because we all did, and because we were told it was the cure.

The Collapsing Tower

The vision the world watched of the tower coming down that dreadful day twenty-five years ago turned out to be an omen - a sign of things to come. The physical embodiment of something that was about to happen in our world at a level the cameras can’t reach.

The men who hijacked those planes knew exactly what they were aiming at. The World Trade Center was built to be the financial capital of the world - a single address where the whole machinery of global commerce lived under one roof; the shipping lines and the customs brokers, the commodity exchanges and the banks, stacked a quarter of a mile into the sky above the harbour where the ships came in. When the towers opened in 1973 they were the tallest buildings on Earth, and the architect, Minoru Yamasaki, dedicated them as “a living symbol of man’s dedication to world peace,” because in his words, world trade meant world peace.

The World Trade Center was the Age of the Mind’s own cathedral - a monument built by money, to money, in the belief that money would hold the world together, championed by the Rockefellers, the family that more or less ran American capitalism, and named for the idea it was built to serve.

That’s why it was the target, and if you lay out that morning you can see the attackers naming the three pillars of American power in each of the buildings they aimed for that day - the World Trade Center for the money, the Pentagon for the military, the Capitol or the White House for the government. Two towers fell that day, and so did the thing they stood for - the tower of top-down power has been coming down slowly ever since.

Every ruler who’s ever sat at the top of the tower has felt the precariousness of their position, looking down at the foundations and realising they’re standing on the backs of the many, and that if the many ever got wise, they could bring the whole thing crashing down, king and all. And every ruler who’s ever felt that has known the one thing that keeps the many in line - the thing that keeps them offering their backs even when it kills them - is fear, pure and simple.

The Pharaohs of the Exodus story knew this when they enslaved the Israelites. The Assyrians knew it when they carved their massacres into their palace walls for visiting envoys to read. Rome knew it when it lined the road to the capital with 6,000 crucified slaves, and the Church knew it for a thousand years with a single picture of hell. The kings of England knew it with heads on spikes at London Bridge, and revolutionary France knew it well enough to call its own government the Terror, and Stalin knew it, and ran the biggest country on earth on the threat of a 3am knock at the door. Machiavelli wrote it down for all of them - “It’s safer to be feared than loved.”

Few and far between is the story of the king who loved his subjects into submission - love doesn’t build towers. Towers are always built on fear.

So no wonder when those towers came down on September 11, the people who sat atop the structure they stood for did what every ruler before them had done and stoked the swirling fear. It’s fine, they said, breathe it in, fill your lungs with it. And then funnel it into fury and aim it outwards, in whatever direction that we point. Where exactly doesn’t really matter, as long as the people remain afraid, because frightened people are easy to control, and they’ll offer their backs freely, often without even realising, for those in power to stand on top of.

Monsters Among Us

For years, we've been living in a world not unlike that depicted in the film Monsters, Inc., where the city is powered by children's screams, and monsters clock in every morning to go through the closet doors and frighten kids in their beds, because that's where the energy that powers the city comes from. When the city faces an energy crisis as the children get harder to scare - as they realise the truth about the monsters in their midst - those in charge plan to kidnap them and extract the screams by force, and when some of the monsters recoil at the notion, they fan the flames of the lie that children are toxic and can kill them with a single touch, enlisting them through fear to do what needs to be done to keep their power supply in place. Swap the children for the rest of us, the screams for the nightly news, and the closet doors for the screens in our pockets, and you've got a reasonable picture of how the tower’s kept its lights on all these years.

Pointing a frightened population towards a perceived enemy is what the monsters did in our world too. In the days after the towers came down, as a whole country asked why anyone would do this to them, the answer came from the top of the tower in the form of a galvanising deceit. "They hate our freedoms," President George W. Bush declared, when the truer answer would have been to say they hate that our freedoms have come at their expense.

The CIA knew as much nearly fifty years before the towers fell, when it coined the term “blowback” to describe the likely consequences of the coup it ran in Iran in 1953 after Iran nationalised its own oil and London and Washington decided it belonged in their hands instead. A year before the 9/11 attacks, a scholar named Chalmers Johnson published a whole book with that very title, warning that America’s empire of bases and interventions would one day arrive on its own doorstep. America needed oil to keep its place at the top of the world, and it rarely asked before taking it from the people who owned it. The smash and grab that Trump’s been trying with Venezuela and the bombs he’s been hurling at Iran are just a more blatant version of what America’s been doing for decades.

Osama bin Laden published his reasons for ordering the attacks years before 9/11, and they had nothing to do with freedom; American soldiers stationed on the holy ground of Arabia to guard the Saudi oilfields, sanctions on Iraq - the price of a war fought over Kuwait’s oil - said to have killed half a million children while a Secretary of State said on television the price was worth it, and Washington’s hand behind everything done to the Palestinians. Nothing in that list excuses a single death on that September morning in New York in 2001, but everything in that list was knowable, and when the towers came down, fear was stoked precisely so that none of us would ever look at it.

That’s the truth the monsters never wanted us to see. The tower we were holding up had been making life unbearable in whole regions of the world so that America could sit at the top of it, and all of us - every one of us in the West filling the car with cheap petrol, whose comfort ran on the arrangement - were part of the machinery, without ever having been asked. When the attack came from the backs the tower stood on, the tower’s answer was to make sure we never looked down.

In Monsters Inc., the children the monsters were taught to fear turn out to be every bit as frightened as the monsters are, and once one of them stops to notice, the whole city changes. Laughter, it turns out, makes ten times the power that screaming does, and by the end of the film the monsters are going through the closet doors to make the children happy, because that’s where the real energy was all along.

That was the opportunity sitting in front of America on the morning of September 12 2001. For one breath the whole world stood at the same wall, feeling the same thing, and there’s a world in which the president could have stood up in that moment and said “For too long we’ve wielded fear like a tool, and all it’s ever made is more fear.” He could have ended it there, in the rubble and the ruin. “We’re going to grieve first,” he could have said, “and we’re going to feel this all the way down, and then we’re going to the walls we have built out of fear and we’re going to stand at them until they come down, because fear’s run this world long enough, and from here, it’s going to run on something deeper.”

But instead what he actually said was “they hate our freedoms.” And three days after the towers fell he stood on the rubble with a bullhorn and promised that the people who knocked the buildings down would pay. He didn’t say the other thing, so we didn’t do it, and we’ve spent the last quarter of a century fighting with the world and fighting with ourselves, terrified of what’s out there, mostly because we’re terrified to look at what’s actually in here.

And now, as the tower of power comes down everywhere at once, the opportunity is still sitting in front of us, right where it’s been for all these years. The them we’ve been taught to fear, on every side and in every direction, turns out to be as frightened as we are, standing at the same wall, wanting the same handful of things…..to be safe, to be fed, to be seen, to be told the truth about the air.

The fear economy only runs while we keep our backs turned to each other. The moment we turn around and feel what the other one needs, the lights come on, and there’s more power in that than fear ever produced.

The Wall and the Lightning

There’s a sky story running above all of this, that connects that tumultuous day twenty-five years ago with the tumult we’re facing now as the tower of power comes down.

On the morning the twin towers fell in 2001, Saturn, the planet of walls and limits, was moving through Gemini, the sign of the mind, and it stood directly opposite Pluto, the planet of power, in Sagittarius, the sign of belief, the crusade, and the story we tell about who we are and who they are. That’s the sky of 9/11 in one sentence - the wall went up around the mind, and power stood across from it wearing the robes of a holy war. Fear got a story, the mind got its walls, and within a fortnight it was “they hate our freedoms,” and within a month it was an all-out war on terror, though terror was what it was actually for.

Pluto’s been walking a long road since then. From Sagittarius, the belief that justified the tower, it moved into Capricorn, the sign of the tower itself - governments, institutions, the structures of power - and spent sixteen years there dismantling them from the inside, cracking the foundations in 2020 when Saturn met it there, and the world was transformed by a global pandemic. And in 2024 it moved into Aquarius, the sign of the many, where it will stay until 2043.

The story.
Then the structure.
Then the people.

Pluto in Aquarius is power leaving the top of the tower and passing down to the ones the tower has always stood on, and there’s nothing any king can do about it, because that’s the direction the sky moves.

Last time it took planes to bring the tower down.
This time it’s the many looking up, and noticing what we’ve been holding.

And this week the lightning arrived in the exact room where the wall went up in 2001. Uranus, the planet of sudden change and the kind of shock that rearranges, stopped dead in the sky and turned around in Gemini - the same sign Saturn was walling in twenty-five years ago. In 2001 the sign of the mind got a wall, and now in 2026 it gets lightning; the disruption in the sky, on the twenty-fifth anniversary of the disruption in the sky, just as the New Moon landed in Virgo where the Sun stood over New York that morning, like a fresh page, planted on the exact spot the old fear was written.

The tower coming down now is the Age of the Mind, the whole architecture we built out of fear so we’d never have to feel. When the towers fell in 2001, from the rubble grew fear, which we converted into fury, marched it off to war, and then we rebuilt the tower on the same ground, only taller this time; the Freedom Tower, standing exactly 1,776 feet high - the year America first declared itself an us against a them - was the mind’s answer to the rubble. A bigger tower with the founding grudge built into its height.

This time, as the tower collapses, the same fear’s emerging from the rubble.

Climate change will kill us.
AI will kill us.
Trump and the Republicans will kill us.
The immigrants will kill us.
The Democrats.
The Muslims.
The Chinese.
The neighbour with the wrong sign in their window.

Fear rising from everywhere all at once, and every bit of it is the same offer we were made in September 2001…..breathe it in, fill your lungs, funnel it into fury and aim it wherever we point. Some of those dangers are real, just like the dust was, but the danger being real has never once meant the fear should choose the response. That only ever rebuilds the tower, taller this time.

The call amidst this collapse is quieter than a bullhorn. Don’t funnel the fear into fury and reach for a verdict, or look for someone, somewhere to blame, at which to aim all that anger. Instead, we’re called to sit with it, and stay at the wall with all the fear and feeling until it thins, because the fear is the boundary of the mind, the very edge of the room it lives in, and just beyond it, on the other side of the wall, is the open expanse of the heart.

That’s where this crossing has been taking us since the foundations cracked.
Out of the mind, and into the heart.

And the rubble is where the door is.

The Heart in the Rubble

So here we all sit, in the rubble of the collapsing tower, with the old fear offering to rebuild it, and the hope this time is that we'll stay with the feeling long enough to reach for something deeper. We saw that kind of reaching happening these last few weeks, as the world found itself in the grips of a Massachusetts murder trial that ended this week in a way no-one expected. Fair warning - what we’re about to dive into is loaded with feeling, so let’s go gently, and if you’re feeling fragile, please proceed with care.

Lindsay Clancy was a young mother on trial for the murder of her three children - Cora was 5, Dawson was 3, and Callan was just 8 months old when, on a January evening in 2023, while her husband Patrick was out picking up takeaway, she took each of them to the basement of the family home in Duxbury and strangled them with exercise bands, then cut herself and threw herself from a second-storey window, sustaining injuries that have left her in a wheelchair for life.

Until a few months before that night she’d been a labour and delivery nurse at Massachusetts General Hospital, a woman whose job was bringing babies into the world. After Callan was born she stopped sleeping, and then came the anxiety, then the depression, then what she described to her doctors as “intrusive thoughts I never had before,” and by mid-December, “persistent, intrusive thoughts of suicide.”

She did everything the system advises - she saw a psychiatrist fourteen times in four months, and went through an outpatient program, and was admitted to McLean Hospital, one of the most famous psychiatric hospitals in America, and was sent home after five days. Along the way she was prescribed a cupboard full of medication and one of her providers suggested what she had might be bipolar disorder, but nobody named the thing that was actually happening to her. Three weeks after she left McLean, her children were dead.

The defence never disputed what Lindsay did, but argued she bore no criminal responsibility for it, because she was in the grip of postpartum psychosis, a condition that arrives in one or two of every thousand births, that hits women with no history of mental illness, that can bring hallucinations and delusions and commands, and that is, in the words of one forensic psychiatrist who testified, “the scariest mental illness that I know of.” A forensic psychologist told the jury that Lindsay had heard a male voice ordering her to kill her children and herself. She'd spent months telling her doctors about the thoughts that led there, and nobody in all that time had properly diagnosed what was happening to her, which is why her lawyer, Kevin Reddington said of her medical care that he was "appalled and disgusted…..it's repulsive what happened here."

The prosecution, on the other hand, called Lindsay an intentional killer. By their assessment, Lindsay was a woman who wanted her children gone, and had the wit to plan it, and their closing instruction to the jury was that “this case is not about our mental health system or how it treats women.”

In days gone by, our world’s had little compassion for mothers who kill their children, and it’s understandable for reasons that hardly need explaining, but something happened during the Lindsay Clancy trial that’s almost unheard of in a matter of this kind - the outpouring of compassion from the public for the woman who murdered her children, in this instance, was overwhelming.

From the first week after the killings, when Patrick Clancy published a statement asking the world to forgive his wife as he had, mothers who’d been through the same thing started speaking. Women who’d stopped sleeping after a birth and become convinced they were being followed. A mother who’d heard voices telling her that her newborn daughter was the second coming of Christ, whose husband finally drove her to a hospital. Survivors who’d waited months for a diagnosis and had been told, like Lindsay, that it was probably bipolar by a system that repeatedly fails to identify or treat the thing that’s been killing mothers and babies in their own homes for years.

There were those who tried to flatten the matter into black and white, whose compassion for the dead children cancelled out any possibility of compassion for the mother who killed them, but right alongside them rose an army of women and men who were able to hold Lindsay in their heart at the same time as the children she harmed, and when the jury went out last week, it became clear that many of the jurors were doing the same.

They deliberated for six days before sending the judge a note, saying, “It is with a heavy heart that we report we are unable to come to a unanimous decision.” As it turns out, eleven of the twelve had been ready to deliver a verdict - not guilty by reason of what had happened to her mind, which would have seen Lindsay committed to a secure hospital for treatment rather than a prison for punishment. Eleven people were ready to say three things at once - what she did was terrible, and we understand how it happened, and we choose compassion - but when the twelfth juror couldn’t bring himself to say the words despite admitting he had reasonable doubt, the machine that exists to produce a verdict produced nothing at all.

The machinery of the Age of the Mind - don’t feel, just file - practically ground to a halt in one of the biggest murder trials of the decade, on live television for all to see, the same way the towers came down twenty-five years ago. Back then, as we were asked to hold the unbearable thing, we did as we were told and felt the fear, funnelled it into fury, pointed it at an enemy we could obliterate, and filed the fear away so we wouldn’t have to feel it. This week we all watched on our screens as a jury was handed the same kind of unbearable thing and refused to do anything but feel.

The question asked in the rubble of 2001 was asked again this week, and this time, at last, it got a heartfelt answer.

Feeling Over Filing

What that jury room was reaching for was something genuinely unprecedented for a trial of this kind in America. Eleven people in Plymouth County refused to make Lindsay Clancy into a monster just so they could feel better - they sat with the feeling for days and refused to hand it to anyone. The ending was imperfect - nothing was solved, nobody got their exit - but what was left standing in the room when the verdict failed to arrive was the feeling; for Lindsay, for her three children, for a husband and father who’d lost everything and had chosen to forgive. The man with the most right to reach for a verdict and make a mother into a monster declined to, and for once, most of the rest of us did the same.

Here in the midst of the collapsing tower of power, the familiar voices of fear are there, as always, reaching for verdicts that make monsters and rebuild the tower. But something stronger and deeper than fear is rising from the rubble too, as eleven strangers held the unbearable and the understandable in the same hand this week, and the world mostly held it with them. What’s rising is feeling that’s finally allowed to be felt, and the more we allow ourselves to feel it instead of fleeing in fear or fury, the more we’ll know what to do with it.

This is the Age of the Heart rising as the Age of the Mind collapses. The heart doesn’t need a monster or a villain, or the explanation that makes the fear manageable. It can hold the whole of a thing exactly as it is, and from inside that holding a different kind of knowing arrives, the kind the mind can’t reach from inside its room. The wisdom of the heart steering, with all the mind’s precision in its service, instead of the fear of the mind steering with the heart locked out. Twelve people in a jury room did it these last few weeks, and eleven of them got all the way there. It’s learnable, and we’re learning, here in the rubble.

The kind of verdict the heart reaches asks for three things the mind never does, not just in the case of a mother who murdered her children, but for the World Trade Center and everything in between - the truth told in full, safety for everyone, and whatever repair is possible, for the living and in the name of the dead. That’s what the mind is for in the age we’re walking into - all of its precision, all of its capacity to weigh and decide, put to work in the service of what the heart already knows; that there is no us and them, they are both one and the same, and so when the verdict comes, it comes via the heart, shaped more like compassion than retribution.

When Them Becomes Us

America is a nation built on us against a them. The whole country was founded as an us against Britain, and it’s never once, in two and a half centuries, gone without a them to define itself against.

North against South.
White against Black.
Us against the communists.
Us against the Russians.
Us against the Chinese.

After that morning in 2001, us against the Muslims.

And now that the outside enemies have worn thin, the them has come home, and it’s Republican against Democrat, red against blue, one half of the country against the other half, with the tower’s keepers pulling the lever as hard as they can to keep it that way. The them is the tower’s fuel the way Monsters, Inc. runs on screams; take the them away and the whole architecture of fear has nothing to burn.

Twenty-five years ago, in the rubble of 9/11, the monster was the Muslim, but this week, it was a Muslim Mayor of New York who cared enough to open the boxes and finally tell a city the truth about the air. This week, he stood at Ground Zero beside four former presidents and offered his hand to former mayor Rudy Giuliani, who'd said Mamdani shouldn't come at all, and Giuliani took it and said “I'll pray for you. It's a really hard job.”

A few feet away, a man reading his father's name used his turn at the microphone to condemn anyone using that morning as a reason to hate Muslims. And for the first time, after the six moments of silence for the planes and the towers, a seventh was added, for the roughly 6,000 people who died afterwards, from what they breathed, with the fire department adding 36 more names to its wall this month for the same reason.

And a woman in Massachusetts did the most unforgivable thing a person can do, and instead of a country turning her into a them, women all over the world looked at her and said some version of “she is me.” Eleven strangers looked at the worst thing a human being can do and found, underneath it, themselves staring back.

And that’s how the tower finally comes down in the end, when the mind lets go long enough to take in what the heart’s always known - that all the thems out there are really just us.

It’s no accident this is happening under Uranus in Gemini - the planet of shock that stopped dead in the sign of the twins this week and turned around. Gemini - the two who are one - the pair that thinks it’s a pair until it suddenly realises it’s a single thing with two faces. That’s every one of us right now, here in the dying days of the Age of the Mind, pondering what happens to a tower built on us-against-them when the them keeps turning out to be us.

The Muslim mayor telling us the truth.
The mother in the dock who is every mother.
The neighbour.
The refugee.
The stranger on the bus.

What happens when the wall between us and them comes down - when we remember, the way the heart has always known, that all of it is one - is what happens every time one of us steps through the door in the wall of our own mind. On the other side there’s no them - only grief and love and a kind of knowing the mind can’t reach from inside its room, and in that place harming another registers as harming ourselves, and caring for another is simply what caring for ourselves looks like once the wall is gone.

That’s the Age of the Heart.
The walls are the thing that goes.

As the tower the mind built to consolidate its power comes down, we are all being handed the same opportunity we were the last time a tower fell, when we collectively reached for a verdict and rebuilt it in fear. That same fear is coming up again - on the news, in the price at the pump, in the war that won’t end and the machines that might end it all, in the weather that’s coming, in the men on the stage telling us who to blame. And it’s coming up inside us all - in our chest, in our throat, in the three-in-the-morning doom scroll. That’s the wall.

And the wall is where the door is.

May we do something different this time than we did twenty-five years ago. May we stay with the fear rather than try to file it. May we sit in it, for one breath longer than the mind can bear, and then another, until it thins and dissolves into the wider place beyond it - the space of knowing and feeling and compassion. From there we can do something other than reach for a verdict and ride off to war. From there we can ask the question, and open the boxes and read what’s in them and let it land.

The tower is coming down, and as it does, the people falling from the top of it will tell us, all the way down, that the only safe place is back inside the room, and that there’s a them out there we should be afraid of.

But the truth is there’s only us.
There’s only ever been us.

The dust we breathed in that morning is in everybody’s lungs. We’ve been breathing it in for twenty-five long years, and we’ve held it through two wars and a queue at every gate until we forgot we were holding anything at all, and it became the air.

It’s time to let it out.
It’s time to step over the threshold, from the place of filing to the place of feeling.
That’s where the new age is rising from.

The air’s clear on the other side, friends.
Breathe it in.

Twenty-five years ago this Friday, the disruption came out of a clear blue sky. This Thursday, on the eve of that anniversary, the sky’s own disruptor marks the moment with a shock of its own that will be felt across nations, by world leaders, and by each of us in our own lives.

This week starts quiet, but it finishes loud.
It’s time to brace for the incoming shock.

Uranus - the planet of lightning, revolution, and the change nobody scheduled - has been moving through Gemini, the sign of the mind, since April, and on Thursday - an anniversary of its own, marking one year since the killing of Charlie Kirk - it stands completely still and starts running backwards. A planet standing still is a planet at full volume, and Uranus running backwards is the planet of disruption turning back toward whatever it already disrupted.

Decisions get undone.
Deals collapse.
Cases that were closed get reopened.
People who were in are suddenly out.

And because it’s happening in Gemini, it comes through words and wires - a leak, a hack, an outage, a document, a resignation, a market lurching on a headline.

Then, hours later, Friday’s New Moon lands on the spot where the Sun stood over New York on the morning of September 11, 2001. The disruption in the sky, on the twenty-fifth anniversary of the disruption in the sky.

The sky is very specific about who takes the shock this week. The chart it’s circling most heavily of all belongs to King Charles, and the House of Windsor. The US Justice Department also takes multiple hits - Kash Patel, Todd Blanche and even Pam Bondi all feel this one personally. The Epstein files light up across a dozen charts at once, through the one man in Congress with nothing left to lose. The shock lands inside the White House, most heavily on the chart of Melania Trump. The Treasury Secretary gets cornered. The Mayor of New York takes it the night before he stands at Ground Zero. California, Newsom, Shapiro and Ocasio-Cortez all take it, and abroad, the sky turns away from Israel and Iran for the first time in months and points instead at China, Brazil, Australia, Russia, France, Hungary, Pakistan, Cuba and Canada, whose counter-tariffs bite on Tuesday.

And the shock is coming for each of us too. If you’ve got anything in your own chart near five degrees of Gemini - or of Sagittarius, Virgo or Pisces, the points the station presses on from across the sky - Thursday is yours. If you were born at the end of May, that’s your Sun right there. Most of us will feel it as weather, wired and restless and sleeping badly for no reason we can name, but some of us will feel it as an event. What’s coming this week is a shock that rearranges; the mind’s great filing cabinets - the law, the files, the crown, the money - turned back to the beginning and read aloud. Everything the mind buried, handed back to it to feel this time. That’s what Uranus in Gemini is for, and it’s what this week is for, sending us out of our minds, and into our hearts.

This week, the whole world stood braced - fists up, eyes on the horizon, every alarm on Earth going off at once, and it didn’t much matter which way we were facing, because wherever we looked, something was coming.

In the Gulf, a month of quiet ended when American forces struck two Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island as the Revolutionary Guard readied mines for the Strait of Hormuz. After Trump posted an AI-generated video of Kharg Island, the port that ships most of Iran’s oil, “being blown to smithereens,” the Pentagon had to explain that no such attack had taken place, while the President announced on social media that Iran was “officially a Failed Nation. IT IS DEAD!”

The dead nation spent the week firing ballistic missiles at Jordan, Bahrain, Kuwait and the UAE, and by week’s end it was firing them at an American aircraft carrier, which answered by sinking one Iranian tanker and crippling two more….. all in the same week Trump told reporters the whole thing was “small potatoes” and the Vice President said he “wouldn’t call it a war.”

Behind the fleet, the machine was showing the strain. A leaked Pentagon briefing revealed that four of America’s own top commanders had formally objected, in writing, to keeping the war going into 2027, warning that barely a quarter of the Navy’s destroyers are fit to sail and that the Navy has been quietly raiding its payroll to pay for combat. The Army Secretary resigned after telling Trump to his face how many generals had been fired, leaving the largest branch of the American military without a confirmed leader at the top, and by the weekend we learned that 50 officers on the Joint Staff had been strapped to polygraphs to find out who’d told the press the missile racks were running empty.

Midweek, the USS Abraham Lincoln limped into port in Thailand after 286 days at sea, her hull rusted to the waterline and her crew short of soap, and when a reporter asked the captain about Trump’s remark that the deployment hadn’t been “nearly long enough,” he said only, “the president speaks for himself.”

Then the war turned up at the petrol pump. Diesel hit the highest price ever recorded in America on Friday, petrol topped four dollars on Labor Day weekend for the first time in history, mortgage rates climbed with the price of oil, and bond markets from Tokyo to Frankfurt sold off as borrowing costs reached levels unseen in decades, all because the strait that carried a fifth of the world’s oil before the war is still choked.

Trump, meanwhile, was pouring concrete. The Supreme Court waved his ballroom through, his Interior Secretary announced work would begin on a 250-foot triumphal arch beside Arlington cemetery, the Mint started selling a one-dollar coin with his face on it, and when a reporter put to him the theory that he builds monuments to himself because nobody else will, he answered, “That’s true. Nobody will do it once I’m gone.”

The man atop America’s tower found himself increasingly alone up there, with his approval rating cratering ahead of the midterms. Republicans in tight races told Trump’s team they don’t want his help campaigning, 45 of his own lawmakers and the First Lady declined to attend his convention next week, and veteran election analyst Charlie Cook told the party to brace for a result that would be “bad, really bad, or truly horrible.”

A whistleblower inside the US Postal Service warned that the system built to enforce Trump's restrictions on mail voting had been rushed so badly that one unreadable barcode could see a batch of 10,000 ballots thrown out and sent back to the state, and that work on it had carried on in defiance of a court order. Just 70 days out from the elections, the courts were having none of it, with three federal rulings against the administration hours after North Carolina posted the first ballots of the midterms.

Across the Atlantic, Britain’s answer to Trump - Nigel Farage - was caught on camera thanking undercover reporters posing as donors channelling American money for secretly funded polling. Though Farage insists his party has not taken an illegal penny, it’s not the first time he’s been accused of dodgy dealings, and the tapes have been handed to the Metropolitan Police for investigation.

Amongst it all, Gloria Steinem died at her home in New York at 92; she spent a lifetime telling half of humanity it was allowed to want more, and this week that voice fell silent. As the world grieved the passing of an icon, it also mourned the loss of more than 1,300 people swept away by last week’s flash flood in Nepal, and the more than 5,000 still missing, as rescuers digging into a hydropower tunnel pulled three workers out of it alive and a woman from the ruins of her house - a small mercy in a sea of sadness.

The ground, meanwhile, was sounding alarms of its own. Hawaii declared a statewide emergency and told residents to stock two weeks’ worth of supplies as a major hurricane bore down on the islands, the third storm to threaten them in three weeks, a flash flood tore through the Grand Canyon, nearly two feet of rain fell on East Texas, and the head of long-range forecasting at the UK Met Office said of the El Niño building in the Pacific, “I have never seen an El Niño signal this intense in our forecasts.” All this the same week the United Nations released a report conceding that the line at 1.5 degrees, the one every climate plan on Earth was built to defend, is about to be crossed.

Put it all together and it feels like we're building to something. The tension's been mounting for months now - alarm on alarm, week on week - and the whole world seems to be standing at the window with its eyes on the horizon, waiting for the onslaught it's sure is coming. As always, the sky has its own reading of what's out there; look up and it’s clear that the shape of what's approaching may not be the shape we're braced for.

War on the Horizon

As August was drawing to a close, Europe collectively held its breath after news broke that CIA director John Ratcliffe had secretly flown to Moscow to hold meetings with Russia’s intelligence chiefs. The last time a director of the CIA flew to Moscow was in November 2021, to confront Putin’s people over the army they could see was massing along Ukraine’s border; Putin’s people said the West was imagining things, but months later the tanks rolled, and the war that’s still burning today began. So when Ratcliffe’s plane was spotted on the tarmac in Moscow last week, every capital between Helsinki and Warsaw began asking, with no small amount of panic, what Washington might know that they didn’t.

The answer leaked out over the following days, in pieces. He’d gone to warn the Kremlin, in person, against attacking a NATO country. He’d gone to tell them to stop feeding intelligence to Iran, and to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to shipping or face new sanctions. He’d floated a summit between Trump, Putin and Zelensky. The Kremlin’s spokesman waved the lot of it away, as did Trump, but then the drums started, one after another, and they haven’t stopped.

Poland’s prime minister told his country that Russia is preparing to escalate, saying that the critical window is likely in the next seven or eight months. Then, Russia’s foreign minister published an essay accusing NATO of “militarising the Far North” and calling it a direct threat to Russian security, while Moscow's ambassador to Norway warned of "a slide into direct military conflict" over Svalbard, the Norwegian archipelago high in the Arctic which is technically NATO territory, but a treaty signed in 1920 forbids anyone from building military bases on it, which means it's the one corner of the alliance with no soldiers standing on it. Russia has 20,000 Arctic troops within reach of it, so if Moscow wanted to test whether NATO will really defend every inch of its ground, that's the inch it would pick.

All of that landed on top of German intelligence's assessment that Russia’s building itself the option of fighting NATO by 2029, and on top of a shadow war that's been widening across the continent for at least the last two years, as Russia’s carried out a covert sabotage campaign using proxies. In 2024, a warehouse storing supplies for Ukraine burned in east London, incendiary parcels ignited inside DHL depots in Leipzig and Birmingham in what officials later described as a test run for sabotaging cargo flights, a plot to assassinate the head of Germany's biggest arms maker was intercepted, and ships suspected of dragging their anchors across the Baltic seabed severed the data cables between Finland and Germany and Estonia. Last month an explosive-laden drone was found at Leipzig airport, and a French drone factory was firebombed.

In response to the increasing Russian taunts, the whole of Europe has been quietly getting ready in a way it hasn't since the Cold War. Germany has set itself the goal of being ready to fight by the end of the decade and brought back a form of military service to get there. Poland is building fortifications along its border, and has promised military training to every adult man in the country. Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania are digging bunkers along their frontiers and, along with Poland and Finland, have pulled out of the treaty banning landmines so they can sow their borders with them. Sweden has posted a booklet titled "In Case of Crisis or War" to every household in the country, the European Union has advised every citizen to keep three days of food and water in the house, and Britain has been rewriting the plans for defending its own soil for the first time in a generation.

As a species, we’ve become very good at watching for war. We’ve been trained for it by every history book and every film and every parent or grandparent who lived through the last one, which is why right now the whole of Europe is watching with the intensity of a continent that remembers exactly how 1939 unfolded and has no intention of being caught out twice.

But it’s not just our fear of history repeating or Russia’s warmongering that keeps us vigilant. The experts that track historic cycles say we’re bang on due for such a crisis.

The Crisis Cycle

In 1997, two American historians named William Strauss and Neil Howe published a book called The Fourth Turning, in which they made the startling claim - after combing through five centuries of Anglo-American history - that every 80 to 100 years or so, society enters a crisis cycle, that usually culminates in a major war.

And according to them, that’s exactly the cycle we’re in now.

Their broader thesis was that history moves in seasons - or turnings, as they called them - and there are four of them, each running roughly 25 years, taking the length of a human lifetime for society to pass through them all in order.

The First Turning is a High - a spring of strengthening institutions and shared purpose, when a society that’s just survived something terrible builds itself a new order and largely agrees to live inside it.

The Second Turning is an Awakening, a summer of spiritual upheaval, when the children raised inside that order rebel against its conformity and go looking for meaning.

The Third Turning is an Unravelling, an autumn of weakening institutions and strengthening individualism, when trust drains out of everything and the culture wars begin.

And the Fourth Turning is a Crisis - a decisive era of upheaval when the old civic order finally breaks and a new one is born, usually in fire.

Look back in history and you’ll see this pattern playing out over and over, and the dates make it hard to argue with. The last High ran from 1946 to 1963 - the years of Truman and Eisenhower, the suburb and the station wagon. The last Awakening began with a shot in Dallas and ran through Woodstock and Watergate to the tax revolts of the early 1980s. The last Unravelling began with Reagan’s “morning in America” and ran through the culture wars, the dot-com bubble and the slow institutional decay of the new millennium, until it ended in the autumn of 2008 when the banks fell over. And that’s where the Crisis began that we’ve been living in ever since, through the financial collapse, the pandemic, the insurrections and the invasions.

Strauss and Howe observed that every Crisis ends by tearing down the civic order the previous High built, which seems about right - the world our grandparents fought to create is precisely the world that’s coming apart now. They also noted that the mechanism that does that tearing down is almost always a war: the Wars of the Roses in the 1480s tore down the feudal order of warring barons, the Spanish Armada in the 1580s tore down Rome's claim over England, the Glorious Revolution in the 1680s tore down the absolute monarchy, the American and French Revolutions in the 1700s tore down hereditary rule altogether, the Civil War in the 1860s tore down the slave economy, and the Second World War in the 1940s tore down the empires. All of these wars closed out Crisis cycles by tearing down what came before, which might explain why - here at the end of our own Crisis cycle, which Howe estimated resolves somewhere in the early 2030s - we’re all scanning the horizon for the army.

The Battle Written in the Stars

But while everyone right now seems to be bracing for the kind of war our whole modern world has been built to try and avoid, this week NATO came out and said it sees no imminent threat of Russian attack. Look up, and the sky’s saying the same thing. Russia’s natal chart, over the next four years, reads as a state breaking under its own weight; a collapsing power testing its enemy for weaknesses while it wrestles with a mounting list of its own. The Russian army is bogged down in a war it can’t win, and while Putin may lash out sideways with drones and cables and fires, probing the NATO alliance at its weakest points to find out whether anyone will answer, there’s no sign in his chart or in Russia’s that they’re escalating towards all-out war. All-out collapse seems far more likely.

Look further, and there’s no major power on Earth whose chart - when held against the sky - carries the signature of a war that would lead to global conflict in the coming years. America’s chart is all about restructuring and reforming - revolution, but not co-ordinated war (look at Trump’s war in Iran for proof, it’s anything but co-ordinated). China’s chart carries the most genuinely heavy military signature, peaking in the early 2030s, but even it reads more like an internal struggle over power than it does an invasion.

With Saturn squaring off against Pluto in 2028 - the same hard angle that sat over the outbreak of the Second World War, and also gave us Suez and Hungary, the Yom Kippur War, Bosnia, and the tinder that lit the Arab Spring - bombs will fall somewhere in the coming years, and a cornered Russia will likely lash out, but nowhere in the sky do we see the architecture of a world war. The sky’s energy in the coming years is going somewhere else entirely.

A global conflict like the world wars of the early 1900s requires top-down co-ordination - a leader calling the shots from the top of the tower and a compliant mass to carry out the fighting down below. That was the kind of sky the Second World War played out under, when Pluto, the planet of power, was in Leo, the sign of the king - that was the sky of Hitler and Stalin and Mussolini, of Churchill and Roosevelt and Hirohito, where whole nations mobilised behind single men, and entire economies bent to a single will, and tens of millions marched because the man at the top said march.

A world war is the pyramid’s masterpiece, and it can only be fought by a civilisation organised as a hierarchy, with a king at the apex and everyone beneath him doing as they’re told, and Pluto in Leo is the kind of sky in which such a thing can be assembled and won. Right now, and for the next 20 years, Pluto is in Aquarius - the sign of the collective, of the network, of power held among equals - which means the pyramid of concentrated power is collapsing into the hive, and the wars already running in the world are the proof of how battle goes under those conditions.

Russia, with a million men and the largest nuclear arsenal on earth, cannot close Ukraine. The United States and Israel, with the most advanced military technology ever built, cannot close Iran, and Israel cannot close Gaza. The pyramids can still start wars under this sky, but they’ve lost the ability to draw the rest of the world into them, because the thing that does that - a whole society bending to a single command - is precisely the thing Pluto in Aquarius is dismantling.

Pluto in Aquarius changes where coordination comes from, and that, in turn, changes how this Crisis will climax. A war that requires a pyramid has no sky left to be fought in; Pluto’s telling us the exact shape of the fight to come.

Pluto’s the planet of power, but it's also the lord of the underworld - of everything buried that we'd rather not look at, and that comes back up whether we like it or not. In Aquarius, the sign of humanity itself, what Pluto digs up over the next 20 years will be the thing every one of us has been part of that Pluto’s always ruled: the wealth under the ground. Coal, oil and gas are the underworld's treasure, dead things buried and then dug up and burned, and the last time Pluto was in Aquarius, in 1781, James Watt's engine turned that treasure into motion and the age of coal began. Pluto takes 248 years to come round again, and here it is, back in the same sign, and the buried thing is coming back up as heat.

While Europe’s digging trenches and sowing landmines and stocking three days of tinned food against a threat we’ve long been taught to fear, the sky is telling us that we’ve all been watching the wrong horizon.

Crossing the Line

This week, the United Nations released a report called Limiting Overshoot, confirming that the 1.5 degree global warming target we hoped never to cross - the line drawn in Paris a decade ago that every climate plan on earth has been built to defend - would now be crossed within years.

Scientists measure how much the world has warmed against how warm it was before the Industrial Revolution - before the thermometer began to climb after we started digging up coal and burning it by the ton in the late 1700s. Last year the world came in at 1.44 degrees above that starting line, uncomfortably close to the 1.5 degrees that the world agreed to hold the warming at when 195 countries met in Paris in 2015, because that’s roughly the point beyond which the scientists said the really dangerous things start to happen, like the ice sheets destabilising, the reefs dying off wholesale, and the summers getting so hot it’s not safe to work outdoors. Every climate plan on earth since then has been built to defend that line, but this week the UN confirmed that the line is gone.

“We are set to breach the 1.5°C limit within the next few years,” said UN Secretary-General António Guterres of a report that's aimed squarely at the COP meeting in Antalya in November; the annual gathering of the countries that signed up to the UN's climate treaty, who've met for a fortnight every year since 1995 to haggle over the climate. Noticeably absent this year will be the United States, after the largest historical emitter on earth formally walked out of the Paris Agreement in January and announced it’s quitting the UN’s climate body altogether, so it will be up to the rest of the world to decide what a planet that’s just lost its line does next.

The report suggests that if every country delivered every promise it’s ever made, in full, with deep cuts starting now, the world would peak at 1.8 degrees, though on the policies governments have actually paid for and put into law, it predicts warming between 2.6 and 2.8 degrees by the end of this century, which would give us a world almost twice as far from the starting line as the one we live in now.

The whole architecture of climate policy for the last decade has been about staying under the 1.5 degree warming line we’re about to blow past, but this week’s report proposes that we must now prepare to spend decades on the wrong side of the line while we cut back carbon emissions in the hope that we can bring the planet’s fever down before the century’s out. To do that will take more than just cutting carbon emissions, because once carbon’s in the air it stays there for centuries, so even on the day the world finally stops adding to it, the temperature won’t suddenly fall - it’ll just stop rising. We have to actively take carbon back out of it, by either growing things that breathe it in, like forests and healthy soils, or building machines that suck it out of the sky and bury it underground - or both.

But that’s a pretty fragile plan, and the report says as much, because taking carbon out of the air only works if the peak stays well below 2 degrees, because past that point the forests we’re relying on to breathe the carbon in will start burning instead, and the machines would have to be built at a scale nothing on earth has ever been built at. Beyond 2 degrees, the world’s glaciers could lose a quarter of what’s left of them by 2100 - which is concerning, given that glaciers are the frozen reservoirs that feed the rivers a couple of billion people drink from, and the thing that came down the Trishuli valley last week was a glacier letting go. Global food production could fall by 14 percent by 2050, in a world that will have more mouths to feed than it does now.

And the great tipping points edge closer with every fraction of a degree. At around 1.5, the scientists already consider it likely that the ice sheets of Greenland and West Antarctica have been pushed past theirs, which means the seas will keep rising for centuries from here. At the peaks this report says we're actually heading for, two more come into view: the Amazon, which past a certain point stops making its own rain and begins turning from rainforest into dry savanna, and the great Atlantic current that carries warm water north and is the reason Britain and northwest Europe are mild rather than frozen. Both move from things the scientists thought unlikely this century to things they can no longer rule out.

“Every fraction of a degree will cost lives, destroy livelihoods, deepen inequality and push ecosystems closer to irreversible damage,” said Guterres. “Humanity is speeding past the limit to avoid climate catastrophe.” Inger Andersen, who runs the United Nations Environment Programme, said a return to 1.5 “is not assured,” and that “extreme heatwaves are already proving that climate impacts will strike faster, hit harder, and last longer.”

We hardly need an expert to tell us - we’ve just lived through Europe’s hottest June on record where 10,000 people died in a single week of heat, and then a fifth heatwave in August that put 300 million people under it, drove the Loire, the Po, the Rhine and the Danube to record lows, and forced Romania to shut down a nuclear reactor because the river couldn't cool it.

Spain and France burned their way through their history books, Algeria fought 154 fires in a single day, Indonesia is having its worst fire season since the last big El Niño, smoke from the Canadian wildfires engulfed North America and put millions of people under air quality alerts, and a city just outside Tokyo got three times its usual August rainfall in half a day.

And then, last week, the wall of water that came down the Trishuli valley in Nepal killing over 1,300 people, with more than 5,000 still missing. The El Niño building in the Pacific right now is forecast to be the strongest ever recorded, with scientists already saying 2027 could well be the hottest year humanity has ever measured.

While we’ve all been vigilantly watching for a world war since the last one, the one we’ll all actually end up fighting won’t be with guns and bombs on battlefields but with solar panels and water tanks on rooftops and in kitchens, against an enemy nobody ever thought to dig a trench against, because the enemy is the way we've all been living.

At War With Ourselves

Though Strauss and Howe predicted a war to close this turning, war itself was never the point of the Crisis cycle - it’s simply the mechanism that tears down the world the previous High built. That’s the actual function of the cycle, to mulch a way of living that no longer serves, and to understand exactly what’s being mulched, we have to look back to the start of the cycle.

The High that followed that last war - the spring of 1946 to 1963 - built the oil economy that gave us the suburb, the two-car garage, the highway, the supermarket, the jet holiday, the plastic in everything, the air conditioner humming through the night. It built the assumption that the shelf is always full and the season turns up on time, and that’s the very thing this Crisis cycle intends to tear down. Everything this week’s UN report says is causing the planet to warm was the prize for winning the last war, and the bill for it has finally come due, and another Crisis cycle has come for it right on schedule.

The war we will fight this time will be against the life we were handed as the trophy for the last one - a war on our past selves, on the habits we were raised inside, on a way of living that the planet itself has now declared it can no longer carry. The enemy this time is our grandparents’ victory, and it won’t be fought by nations hurling bombs at one another as much as it will be by each of us navigating climate change landmines everywhere in our own lives.

Ration books.
Lawns dug up for vegetables.
Blackout curtains.
Make do and mend.
Saucepans collected for Spitfires.
Petrol coupons.
Meatless Mondays.

In wartime, whole populations changed how they moved through the world almost instantaneously, because the emergency demanded it and everyone could feel that it did; a ship sunk in the Atlantic on a Tuesday was an empty shelf in the kitchen within weeks - cause and effect felt directly, at the dinner table, by everyone at once.

That’s the shape of the Crisis we currently find ourselves in - the home front with the front line removed, whose battlefields are a kitchen, a car, a thermostat, a ballot box, a supermarket trolley, a decision about what to buy and what to plant and who to vote for and what to stop pretending, and the beaches and capitals and surrender ceremonies of the last Crisis are nowhere to be seen, which is why it doesn’t feel like a war, and why we keep looking past it for one that does.

This is the war Howe and Strauss predicted. This is the battle we’re facing, declared this week by the United Nations without a single bomb or gun, mirroring what’s written right across the sky.

The Sky that Changes Minds

Strauss and Howe never mention astrology, and I suspect they’d be horrified to find themselves in a piece like this one, but what they were tracking was patterns and cycles in history, which, ironically, is fundamentally what mundane astrology is. They just tracked their cycles with earthly measurement, whereas astrology anchors the patterns in the sky, but their cycle and the one in the stars actually speak to each other quite coherently.

Howe and Strauss had a name for the cycle of their four turnings - from High, to Awakening, to Unravelling to Crisis. That 80 to 100 year period was called a saeculum, and it maps almost exactly to the 84 year cycle of Uranus’ journey around the Sun. For the last 250 years, Uranus, the planet of shock, rewiring and revolution, has shown up at the climax of each Crisis in the part of the sky known as Gemini - the sign of the mind - rewiring the collective mind from the ground up, and breaking the Crisis cycle.

Uranus was in Gemini in the 1770s when the Revolutionary War was fought, and in the 1860s when the Civil War was fought, and in the 1940s when the Second World War was fought, and it’s back there now, where it will stay until 2032, as the world sails past its 1.5 degree warming line and into unknown territory.

Uranus in Gemini is often misread as the “war transit” but it really has nothing to do with war at all - it’s actually more about change. It’s a change to the way we think, and when the mind is confronted with change, it sees it as a threat and usually goes to war. It’s a prediction machine, using past data to calculate what will happen next as a way of keeping us safe. It has no ability to feel into the future, so it calculates what will happen next based on probability - tracking past events to predict future ones by following a pattern. Any change to the pattern disrupts the mind’s ability to predict, so change is its greatest enemy. And right now, the mind is facing its greatest nemesis of all - a change to the way the world around it operates. The weather, and therefore the world, is becoming less predictable, and therefore - to the mind - far more dangerous. The change must be stopped at all costs, says the mind, if we wish to remain safe. And so we fight.

That’s essentially what’s happened every time we’ve been to war in each of the past Crisis cycles - the world has gone into battle to fight the mind’s war on change. And here we are again, with Uranus in Gemini rewiring the mind, and the mind staging its familiar revolt.

With Chiron, the wound, in Taurus, the sign of the Earth, and Neptune, the planet of the oceans and the ice and the fog, in Aries, the sign of fire, the sky is telling us the shape of the change that’s coming - with the planet of ice sitting in the sign of fire for the whole of this Crisis’ climax.

The fires of July were the opening shots. The wall of water in the Trishuli valley was the second volley. And if this Fourth Turning has a Pearl Harbor still to come - a single shock that ends the argument and turns a divided world into a mobilised one - the sky’s candidate is the El Niño building in the Pacific right now, and the summer of 2027 it’s going to deliver.

That’s the war - the one we’re actually fighting against a changing climate, fought by the mind that created it.

The Language of the Earth

Reading all of this, you might be starting to worry that we’re all doomed, and if that’s what you’re thinking, you’re not alone. There are plenty of voices right now telling us we’re cooked - from the generals counting Russian divisions to the scientists counting tenths of a degree - and every one of them is the mind talking, declaring in a hundred different ways that the pattern has broken.

When the mind can no longer rely on the past to predict the future, it screams catastrophe because it knows it’s losing control. If it can’t guess what’s next then it can’t keep us safe, and if it can’t keep us safe, we’ll have to rely on something that can, which means the mind will be dethroned, and it can’t see past its own supremacy. To the mind, it’s literally the end of its world.

But the world is not ending - the way we’ve been living in it is. Things will have to change, but the world itself will endure, as it has through worse; what’s ending now is the world as we’ve known it, and the world as we loved it, and in many ways that’s the hardest change of all.

Though it may not always look like it, what’s happening now is the Earth beginning to right itself, painfully and sometimes even violently, forcing humanity into the kind of discomfort that prompts another kind of change - a change in behaviour, so we stop asking the Earth to take the hit so we don’t have to, and start moving through the world in a way that works for us and for the planet we inhabit in equal measure. This is the end of domination; the Earth no longer works for us. From here, we work with it, and to do that we must learn to speak its language.

The Earth has no words or numbers - it speaks in cause and effect, felt directly: the tree lopped and the shade gone, the water drawn and the river low, the soil stripped and the dust on the wind. We spoke that language once, because for almost all of our species’ time on this planet it was the only way to stay alive, and the mind’s languages - the thermometer, the forecast, the satellite feed - are merely translations of it, brilliant ones, that somewhere along the way we mistook for the original. Some of the oldest cultures on Earth never made that mistake, and they’re still speaking it now.

In Australia, the Noongar people of the south-west have six seasons, and none of them begins on a date. Bunuru arrives when the marri blossoms, Djeran when the salmon run, Kambarang when the moodjar tree bursts into orange flower. Nobody consults a calendar - the land says when, and for 60,000 years on the driest inhabited continent on Earth that was enough, because a season you feel arriving can’t be thrown out by a shifting pattern. It arrives when it arrives, and you move with it.

High in the Andes, Quechua farmers have watched the Pleiades rise in the late-June dawn for at least 400 years, and they decide when to plant their potatoes by how bright the cluster looks. Clear and sharp means the rains will come on time; dim and hazy means plant late. In 2000, a team of scientists put satellite data against the farmers’ method and found it worked, because the high, thin cloud that dims the stars in June is El Niño’s fingerprint, and El Niño is what dries out the rains in October. The farmers had been reading El Niño in the sky for centuries before anyone gave it a name.

On Boxing Day 2004, on the Surin Islands off Thailand, the Moken sea people watched the ocean pull back from the shore, heard the cicadas fall silent, and remembered a story their elders told about the “laboon”, the wave that eats people, which drinks the sea before it comes. They walked to high ground and took the tourists with them, and while the same wave killed more than 200,000 people around the Indian Ocean, the Moken of Surin lost nobody. What saved them was a feeling, a story to hold it in, and the willingness to act on it before the mind could argue.

And in the far north, the Inuit have a single word, “sila,” that means the weather, the air and the world outside, and it also means wisdom. A wise person is “silatujuq” - someone with a large sky. Weather and wisdom are one word, because for most of human history they were the same skill.

The way forward keeps the satellites. The instruments that confirmed the Pleiades, the seismographs, the climate models are the mind’s work and they’re brilliant, and the cultures that never stopped listening would be the first to use them. What they never did was let the translation replace the original. They keep feeling the land, and they let the instruments serve the feeling rather than the other way round, which is the skill that’s been practised for tens of thousands of years by the people who’ve lived on this planet longest.

They never forgot.
We’re being asked to remember.

Call and Response

And that’s really what all of this is about. Beginning again. The Earth is asking us, rather forcefully, to return to a way of operating that once held all things in greater balance. Not the mind imposing its will over all that it surveys, but the mind in service of the heart, where what we think and do is inspired by what we can feel.

We’re being called into a deeper part of ourselves that knows how to navigate by feeling, that senses what’s needed for the next moment, without the need for a calculated forecast. That felt sense is what’s been missing in all the many years we’ve been attempting to tackle the climate crisis - we've known what's warming the planet and how to stop it for decades. The solar panel is the cheapest electricity in history, the batteries work, the forests know how to breathe carbon, and every country on earth has already written down what it would do about it. The plan's been sitting on the table for years. The mind wrote it, but in all the years the mind hasn’t been able to make us pick it up.

It can't because the mind only moves for what it can feel, and it can't feel a stranger's summer or a neighbour's harvest or a tree it will never see. It discounts them, the way we all discount a bill that isn't due yet, and that discount is the entire economics of the modern world - the cost that lands on someone else, somewhere else, sometime else, and so counts for nothing. The facts have had four decades to move us, and still we’re dithering - the mind has failed us, and as it’s freaking out about the discomfort of change, it’s time to lean into something deeper.

The heart is the deeper part of us that was built for exactly the terrain the mind is now so frightened of - a world that no longer runs to schedule - and it’s been waiting, patient as water, for the mind to run out of predictions and finally hand over the wheel. When the heart looks at this week’s UN report, it senses something the mind can’t. It hears a call.

And that’s how our world has always evolved, friends - by call and response. Every one of Strauss and Howe’s Fourth Turnings was a calamity while it was happening, but through that calamity rose opportunity - call and response. Granted, nobody standing in the rubble of 1945 was calling it an opportunity while they were living through it, and yet the response was the NHS, and the welfare state, and the Marshall Plan, and the Declaration of Human Rights, and the longest run of peace and prosperity the West has ever known. The winter was what made the spring possible, because it was the thing large enough to force a whole civilisation to respond together. This winter is larger than any before it, because for the first time the calamity is of the mind's own making, and a crisis the mind made can't be answered by the mind, only by the faculty it spent an entire age suppressing.

The calamity is the call.
The new world is the response.
This crisis is the door that leads into the Age of the Heart.

These are the days where the mind is being called to finally hand over to something that can feel the tree before it’s lopped, and the water before it’s run, and the earth before it’s drilled, and then bring every ounce of its formidable cleverness to bear in service of what the heart already knows.

The solar panels and the batteries and the heat plans are the mind’s work, and they’re brilliant, and they’ve been sitting there for years waiting for the will to deploy them. The will is the heart’s work. The mind in service of the heart is the most formidable instrument available to a human being, and this is the war it was made for.

So yes, the mind is right that this is the crisis.
It's just wrong about what the crisis is for.

The Home Front of the Heart

Every Crisis in Strauss and Howe’s 500 year study gave way to a High - like winter turning to spring - and though it feels like doom from where we stand now, the sky assures us that High is coming, and it’s closer than most of us might think.

In 2032, Uranus and Saturn cross together into Cancer - the sign of home, of family, of the people we look after and the places we belong - and that’s when the pressing of these Crisis years finally abates and the building of something better begins. The last time Uranus made that crossing, in 1948, what got built in the rubble of the war was the entire post-war architecture of care, and it was built fast, within 18 months, by people who had just learned what the alternative looked like. That was the heart’s first draft of a civilisation organised around looking after each other, and it was a good draft, but the mind was still holding the pen, and it built the pyramid version - big governments handing care down to grateful populations, and an oil economy underneath the whole thing to pay for it.

This time the building happens with Pluto in Aquarius, all the way to 2043, which means the second draft gets written by different hands - by the network rather than the throne. By 200 nations with nobody above them and by billions of households who’ll spend the next six years learning to feel what their choices cost, and it gets written against the first threat in the whole history of the saeculum that’s genuinely common to every human alive.

Strauss and Howe say a Crisis resolves through what they call the regeneracy - the moment a divided, exhausted society rediscovers a shared purpose because it finally faces a shared danger, and that shared danger becomes a shared feeling which then produces a coherent response. Every regeneracy before this one was forged against another nation, but this one gets forged against the weather, which recognises no border and checks no passport, and that’s why the age that’s coming is the one that can meet it. This Crisis is shaped exactly like the hive that’s rising to answer it.

That’s not to say that the climate will have righted itself in a few years’ time - that’s going to be a long project, but the sky assures us we’re up to the task and there’s hope ahead. In 2038 Neptune, the collective dream, moves into Taurus, the sign of the Earth, and the last time it did that, in the 1870s and 80s, we dreamed electricity out of the air and into the walls of our houses, and this time it will do for the regeneration of the earth what that visit did for electrification.

In 2044 Pluto finishes its work in Aquarius and moves into Pisces, where it last travelled while the Romantic poets insisted that feeling was a way of knowing. That was the heart as counterculture, and this time it arrives as the culture - as hearts that can feel the tree being lopped build a civilisation that doesn't want to lop it in the first place, planting forests to undo the damage a civilisation that forgot its heart had done.

So here’s the home front, friends, and it’s a lot closer than the horizon. It’s the tightening in the chest when the news of the day leaks in - the drones, the degrees, the death, the despair, and the doom - and that tightening is the Earth’s language arriving in the body, as cause and effect felt directly, the first word of it most of us have let ourselves hear in a very long time. The mind hears it as fear and scans the horizon, finds an enemy, and goes to war, but fear is just the sensation we meet when the mind has reached its outer wall, at the limits of what it can hold; it’s the door in the wall between the mind and the heart, and it opens the longer we stay with it, so stay. Let it be exactly what it is, without reaching for the argument that would explain it away.

Stay, and the alarm thins into grief - for the summers we assumed we’d keep, for the world we were handed, and loved, and are losing. Grief is not dysfunction - it’s just the distance between what we wished for and what we got, between the world we hoped to keep and the world that actually is. We’re allowed to feel it, and if we stay with it we’ll find more just beyond it: feelings that lead to feelings that lead to feelings, which is the language of the heart.

This is the language we’re being asked to become fluent in, so we can sense the tree before it’s lopped, and the water before it’s run, and the air before it’s breathed, and every living thing we share this planet with, and the Earth can speak to us and we will listen, and feel it as part of us. That’s the feeling the Noongar know a season by, the one the Moken trusted over the argument, the one the farmers in the Andes read in the dawn sky, and the moment we feel it we’re speaking the Earth’s language again - the one that’s been underneath the fear the whole time, waiting for us to stop running.

A person who’s felt the tree doesn’t need to be told what to do about the tree. The feeling moves us on its own - to the garden, or to the ballot, or to our neighbour, or to the conversation we’ve been avoiding - the way it moved our grandparents to dig up the lawn to plant veges during the war, and moved the Moken up the hill, without a forecast and without a plan. Enough of us feeling it, and following where it leads, is how the heart rises, person by person, out of the confines of the mind and into what the Inuit would call a larger sky.

That’s the home front, then and now.
That’s the war we’ve been waiting for.
That’s the Age of the Heart, arriving the only way it can.

The mind’s been waiting for an army.
The heart’s been waiting for exactly this.

The Last Quarter Moon arrives in Gemini - the release phase of the lunar cycle, landing in the sign of thought, language, and the stories we tell. A Last Quarter Moon always asks what needs letting go before the next New Moon plants its seed, and in Gemini the answer is nearly always a narrative, a mental habit, or an old telling.
