I love this. We live in a wild time where it's clear that *something* is awakening in our cosmic consciousness. Personally, I've had bits and pieces of Yeats' "The Second Coming" playing on a loop in my brain lately and the imagery of the Lion, of the Sphinx, and of things falling apart because the center is no longer able to hold is only rising in intensity. While a favorite of mine in my undergrad English Lit days, I hadn't read it in probably 20 years but strangely, it popped into my head a few weeks ago compelling me search it back out. Hopefully, whatever rough beast is slouching toward Bethlehem is better than our current predicaments...
It’s eerie how Yeats’ words still feel like they’re being written in real time. The Second Coming isn’t just a war-era poem, it’s a diagnosis of what happens when the old order collapses, the “center” can’t hold, and something unknown starts pressing in. The Lion/Sphinx figure has always felt to me like a stand-in for the next era itself - not necessarily evil, but utterly alien to what came before. Yeats wasn’t promising salvation, he was warning that the birth of a new age can be messy, monstrous, and unstoppable. Maybe the real hope is that we’re more awake this time, able to shape what’s coming instead of being steamrolled by it.
Wow! I fully enjoyed this post! Thank you! That “somewhere between the ancient sky and modern mysticism, a memory breaks the surface.” Let it rise…and roar!
I loved this post too. Didn’t feel like I wrote it - feels like I unearthed it. Some writing flows through me, other writing feels like I have to dig for it. This one was a dig….an excavation….with treasure at the end.
What a beautiful and insightful analysis! I appreciate that you always teach me something. In particular, the power of the lion resonates with me because my kindergarten grand began the school year with a surprise box to be opened the night before kindergarten. What it contained was a furry lion bracelet with the encouragement to wear it and to be brave. These kindergartners were born slightly before or during the pandemic. The lion seems appropriate.

I guess I thats my que to dig deeper.
You definitely should look into her work. She was a groundbreaker!
