It takes discernment to know when to honor someone else’s need and when to bypass it for self value. It can be a very difficult line to discern. Both sides of the line are critical to true spirituality.
Yes, very challenging. I always think of the safety check the flight attendants give where they say "put your own oxygen mask on before you help someone else with theirs". You really can't help another if you don't help yourself. You can't give what you do not have. No water comes from an empty well. You are better able to care for others when you care for yourself, one is not more important than the other.
