This week was a wig on a burning world - a performance, thicker and more golden than reality, sitting on top of a raging fire, as if the costume can disguise the flames, and as if the heat won’t eventually burn through the disguise.
Unable to find his way out of the war he started in Iran - which has almost entirely depleted the US long-range missile stockpile - and with the US economy posting 23,000 jobs losses last month, Donald Trump’s approval ratings cratered this week to 32 percent, the lowest of his political career and worse than his standing after January 6. Over two thirds of Americans now say they disapprove of his performance as president, which is Nixon-before-resignation territory, and as a result his fellow Republicans are freaking out that they’re about to be annihilated by the voters in mid-term elections in just three months time - which they likely are.
Trump, though, appears both unfazed and unhinged - lost in complete denial and unable to keep a grip on reality, he spent the week railing against US Attorney and former Fox News host, Janine Piro, for dropping charges against a three-time Olympian canoeist - falsely accused by Trump of vandalizing the Reflecting Pool - due to what she told a judge was a lack of evidence to support the charges. The decorated sports hero had been facing the possibility of a decade in jail all because Trump wanted someone arrested for vandalism so he wouldn’t have to take the rap for the dodgy job his contractor did on the pool.
At the same time, former FBI Director James Comey’s lawyers filed motions alleging his indictment - for posting seashells arranged in the shape of “8647” on Instagram - involved “vindictive and selective prosecution” and “irregularities in the grand jury process,” after it emerged that agents who interviewed Comey had been told to send their summary directly to Trump on Air Force One. Judges across the country are now publicly questioning whether DOJ lawyers can be trusted to tell the truth.
And speaking of the Department of Justice and the truth, this week, Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche rescinded Trump’s $1.776 billion slush fund - intended to reward January 6 rioters - after Senators Cornyn and Tillis said they wouldn’t confirm his nomination for AG until the fund was confirmed dead in writing. They got their one-pager, and Blanche’s nomination sailed through the Senate, confirming Trump’s personal lawyer as the people’s lawyer, though everybody knows exactly who he’s really working for. However, legal analysts noted that while the fund may have been rescinded, what stayed in place was the promise that Trump, his sons, his company, and its associates won’t face IRS audit or tax prosecution for anything filed before 2026, potentially shielding somewhere in the order of $100 million in unpaid taxes.
That revelation comes hot on the heels of Capital One filing in court this week that it closed 385 Trump accounts not for political reasons - as Trump has long maintained - but because transaction patterns had triggered their anti-money-laundering review. This the same week Trump began selling millisecond-early access to his social media posts on his own platform to Wall Street trading firms for up to $100,000 a month, allowing them to trade before the public sees anything, which ethics experts called “brazen corruption.” It’s just so hard to imagine why his approval rate is tanking.
To distract from his poor performance, Trump gave a performance of a different kind, posting a slew of AI images on social media, depicting himself as Elvis, as a Continental Army officer, writing on a map of America while Lincoln and Washington looked approvingly on, and posing alongside Patton and MacArthur. Then, for good measure, he turned up at a press conference in Las Vegas sporting what appeared to be a wig, his bouffant of windswept hair considerably thicker and more golden than in days prior - it’s an analogy for life in Trump’s America, really, where everything’s a carefully arranged performance sitting on top of a considerably more serious story.
And this week, that more serious story was on fire across the whole Northern Hemisphere, in the most literal sense possible. Trump’s political fire and a very real one with actual flames have been burning alongside each other for months, side by side, and they’re not unconnected, and the sky has quite a lot to say about both.

Turning Up the Heat
It’s fair to say that, politically speaking, much of the world has been feeling the heat this year, as Donald Trump has taken a blow torch to the post-war order and the United States constitution and begun burning both to the ground. He’s destabilised NATO, as well as America’s relationship with…well…just about everybody, and brought the world economy to its knees with his reckless war in Iran that saw the Strait of Hormuz closed for months, choking off the oil and fertiliser that keep the modern world running, with damaged gas plants pushing the world's LNG supply back by years as the war grinds on with no end in sight. Add into the mix what’s been going on in the rest of the world - Britain ditching its sixth Prime Minister in a decade, Putin’s relentless war against Ukraine, and Netanyahu’s genocidal antics in the Middle East - and what we have is a political dumpster fire that’s seemingly burning out of control.
But in recent weeks that political blaze has been matched by a literal one, as - all at once, it seemed - the Northern Hemisphere burst into flames.
435,000 hectares across Europe have burned already this year, when the twenty-year average for this point in the season is 172,000. This week, two aircrew died over Greece when their helicopters collided in the smoke above a fire near Psatha - the fourth and fifth people to die fighting fires in Greece in the space of five days alone - while Spain recorded the largest fire in its history, and France broke its annual record; the fire that tore through the Gironde in late July burned 42,000 hectares and 240 homes, and forced 220,000 people out of their houses in what was the largest peacetime evacuation in French history.
And it’s not just Europe that’s burning. Canada has lost more than 3 million hectares, almost all of it in a five-week burst, and when the smoke from those fires crossed a continent, 18 American states went under air quality alerts, with more than 100 million people breathing it, and the city of Milwaukee recorded an air quality index of 644, way past the top of the scale the Environmental Protection Agency built to measure such things. The United States itself has burned over 5 million acres - 43 percent above its ten-year average - and as Washington State declared a wildfire emergency last weekend the National Preparedness Level reached Level Five, which is the maximum, which means every available resource in the country is committed.
Of course, these fires didn’t come out of nowhere. Europe just lived through the hottest June it’s ever had - in a single week that month, more than 10,000 Europeans died in the heat, and on a single day in Paris, there were 109 heat related deaths, in a city where the normal figure is 7.
And the increasing heat doesn’t just bring fire, but also drought. From orbit right now, you can see the rivers of Europe getting narrower. The Rhine has fallen to a record low as German industry tries to work out how to move things without it, while on the Danube, they’re blasting the riverbed to keep the shipping channels open, after a cruise ship ran out of food and water because it couldn’t get anywhere, and the water level is now so low they’re finding the bones of wooly mammoths that died in the Ice Age in exposed ground that’s long been covered by water.
In the Alps, “glacier loss day” - the day in the year when a glacier has melted through all the snow that fell on it that winter and starts eating its own ancient ice - arrived at the end of June, when it normally comes in the middle of August. The Rhône Glacier lost a metre of ice in ten days. Meanwhile, 82 per cent of the world’s ocean has been under marine heatwave conditions this year, and in the Mediterranean it’s 98.
As the political inferno has been stealing all the headlines this year, the literal one has had to jostle for attention, even when the flames were licking at our doors. Ten thousand people dying in a heat wave should have pushed the likes of Trump right out of the global headlines, but heat doesn’t really look like anything when it’s killing quietly, so the madman with the nuclear codes and his antics that make must-see television stole the spotlight every time.
A mid-term election in November might go some way to turning down the temperature in the halls of power in Washington, but there’s no vote that will bring global temperatures down, or clear the smoke in the sky, or fill dry river beds with water, and that’s the actual pressing story of this year, and of the coming decades, according to both science, and the sky.

Science and the Sky, Agreed
The Earth suddenly speaking in fire and flame comes as no surprise to the scientists who’ve been saying this was coming for decades.
Science has been warning us in one form or another for at least 170 years, since an amateur scientist named Eunice Newton Foote filled glass cylinders with different gases and a thermometer, placed them in the sun, and found that the one filled with carbon dioxide got hotter than the others, and stayed hot longer once she moved it into the shade. “An atmosphere of that gas would give to our earth a high temperature,” she wrote of her findings in 1856, but it wasn’t until a century later in 1958 that Charles David Keeling worked out carbon dioxide was actually accumulating after he began taking daily readings of the air, and those readings have gone up every single year since, without exception.
By 1965, a report landed on President Lyndon Johnson’s desk telling him that carbon dioxide from burning fossil fuels could bring measurable and marked changes to the climate, and by 1979, a committee of American scientists published the first proper assessment of the situation, concluding that doubling carbon dioxide would warm the world by about 3 degrees, which would be catastrophic for humanity. That same year, the world’s meteorologists held their first global climate conference in Geneva, and by 1988, NASA scientist James Hansen was imploring the US Senate to act, saying, “It is time to stop waffling so much and say that the evidence is pretty strong that the greenhouse effect is here.” The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change was founded that same year.
By 2018, the IPCC worked out that to hold warming to 1.5 degrees and stave off the worst, we’d need to halve global emissions by 2030, and reach net zero by 2050, and that started a kind of countdown clock - twelve years to save the planet. There were a whole raft of global initiatives instigated to meet that target, alongside concerted efforts to thwart those initiatives, and as a result, the curve has never once bent. 2025 came in at 1.44 degrees above pre-industrial, and the European climate service now expects the world to cross sustained 1.5 degrees before the end of 2029. According to science, we’re about to cross into climate territory no human civilisation has ever experienced.
While science has been sounding the alarm for decades, the sky’s been foretelling the same thing in its own way, marking 2026 as the moment when the wound of the Earth would become visible. In the sky, Chiron represents the wound, and Taurus represents the body and the Earth, so it should be no surprise that as Chiron stepped into Taurus at the end of June this year, Europe began feeling the first effects of a record heatwave. The devastating fires, the smoke, the drought, the glaciers melting - everything that’s happened alongside this year’s record heat has played out under Chiron in Taurus.
The wound of the Earth is speaking loudly this year, and the sky says it still has more to say.

The Wound of the World Revealed
As the northern summer ends in September, Chiron will slide back out of Taurus into Aries, and for a few months it may look like the worst has passed - at least to those in Europe and the Americas - but it won’t have; it will just have changed hemispheres, as an El Niño bears down on the Pacific.
El Niño is a warming of the central and eastern Pacific Ocean that throws the world's weather patterns out of whack. We’ve experienced them before - the phenomenon is not new - but the El Niño now building in the Southern Hemisphere is forecast to be more intense than any previously recorded, bringing record temperatures to places like Australia, already the driest inhabited continent on Earth. In July, the Pacific was nearly 2 degrees above average, and experts predict it will reach 3.5 degrees above average by October; the strongest El Niño ever recorded was a 2.65 - nobody’s ever seen 3.
The 1983 El Niño was a 2.6 and it produced Ash Wednesday during which 75 Australians died and more than 2,000 homes burned to the ground in an afternoon. And the drought that same El Niño drove across the Horn of Africa became the Ethiopian famine, which killed something close to a million people. That’s what 2.6 degrees above average wrought, so no wonder scientists have concern from what we’ll see with 3.5.
That 1983 El Niño was a Chiron in Taurus special, showing up the last time the wound in the sky traversed the sign of the Earth, as it is again now. Chiron in Taurus doesn’t always produce El Niño, but it always makes the wound of the Earth visible and unavoidable.
In 1876, when Chiron was in Taurus, somewhere between 30 and 50 million people died in what remains the worst climate mortality event in human history when the monsoon failed across India, and the rains failed in northern China and Brazil. In 1930, Chiron in Taurus coincided with the Dust Bowl - drought meeting a generation of ploughing that had torn out the grasses holding the plains together, and the soil of a continent lifting off the ground and blowing away. In 1983 it was the El Niño that burned through large swaths of Australia and triggered famine in Ethiopia, and now in 2026, it’s fire in the northern hemisphere and an El Niño in the southern one, arriving together with Chiron in Taurus.
Every time Chiron moves through Taurus, the wound of the Earth rises for healing, and since we can’t heal what we refuse to see, the wound always rises in a way that we can’t look away from.
But what we’ve witnessed these past few months with the wildfires in the Northern Hemisphere is really just a preview of things to come - Chiron right now is only dipping its toes into Taurus, before retreating back into Aries in September. It returns for the long haul in April next year, just as researchers expect the most severe consequences of this El Niño will start landing in the second half of 2027, and the next seven years with Chiron in Taurus will bring more of what we’ve just lived through, as the wound in the body of the Earth becomes undeniable and forces the question of what we plan to do about it.

A World Without Limits
To understand the wound that Chiron in Taurus is asking us to account for, we have to look back to when the wound was first made, and both science and the sky agree on exactly when that was.
Every graph of carbon in the atmosphere ever drawn is measured against the pre-industrial baseline reading of 280 parts per million - the flat line the world held for thousands of years of human civilisation up until the late 1700s, just before the line started to lift around the time James Watt patented the gear that turned the steam engine’s up-and-down motion into a turning wheel that could power a factory, and the Industrial Age began.
For the whole of human history up to that point, almost everything that got made was made with muscle. Cloth was made by hands. Iron was hammered by an arm. Grain was ground by a horse walking in a circle, or with the help of a river if you were lucky enough to have one, but even watermills and windmills still only did a fraction of the work - pretty much everything that moved through the world was pushed, pulled, carried or lifted by muscle in the Age of Might, and that muscle had to eat and rest, which put a limit on what humans could achieve.
But when Watt gave the engine a wheel in 1781, that limit was suddenly lifted, as one machine could now do the work of hundreds of muscles without ever stopping for rest or food. For the first time in human history, society - which till then had largely been built around who had the strongest bodies - began to organise itself around a new currency; with machines able to do the work of the body, humans, for the first time, were given more time for thought. And so dawned the Age of the Mind.
In the two and a half centuries since Watt’s patent, we have thought our way to extraordinary heights - while the machine worked for us in the background, our minds worked out the age of the universe, and the structure of a cell, and the shape of a galaxy, and built vaccines and aeroplanes and antibiotics and telescopes that see backwards through time. With the mind free to lead, we even doubled how long a human being gets to live, and almost every single thing we know about the world we live in, we found out in that window over the last two hundred and fifty years, because enough of us were finally freed from spending the day pushing or pulling something that we could push our minds to the limit of what they could do, building on the writings of the likes of Descartes and Newton from the 1600s, whose philosophies proposed the Age of the Mind that the steam engine eventually paid for.
And the price for all that progress was paid in coal - the food the machine fed on. We’d been burning it since the 1200s, but never at such a scale; England was pulling perhaps 200,000 tons a year out of the ground in the 1550s, but by the 1800s, it was 20 million - seven times the whole of continental Europe.
As the coal came out of the ground to feed the machine that freed the mind to lead, the smoke went into the air, and it’s still there today. Every idea we’ve had in the last two hundred and fifty years was funded by carbon. The vaccines and the telescopes and the doubled lifespan and the device you’re reading this on - all of it was paid for, and the Earth was the one who paid. The Earth took the blow so that the mind could be free to think.
And that’s the wound now rising for healing - the one Chiron is calling our attention to as it traverses the same part of the sky it was in back when Watt gave the world his turning wheel that kicked off the industrial revolution, and that powered the Age of the Mind. Chiron is returning to the scene of the climate crime - so to speak - asking the mind to account for what it did to the Earth so that it could thrive.
The bill for the Age of the Mind is finally due, and Chiron in Taurus is not the only planet ensuring it gets paid.

The Price at the Edge of the Age
Alongside Chiron in Taurus, Pluto is also back in Aquarius where it was when Watt’s machine freed the mind; the whole founding sequence of the industrial world happened not only with the wound in the sign of the Earth, but the planet of what lies buried moving into the sign of the air. Sometimes the astrology is gobsmackingly literal.
Pluto rules the things that come out of the ground - the ores, the fuels, the plutonium that carries its name - and Aquarius is the sign of the collective, and the thing we all share and nobody owns, like the atmosphere. The last time Pluto moved through Aquarius, we dug the buried carbon up and put it into the air, and now we’re living through the Pluto return of the industrial age, Pluto is unearthing what was buried, putting it on the table, and refusing to let us leave the room until it’s been looked at.
With Chiron in Taurus making the wound of the Earth visible from now until 2033, and Pluto in Aquarius surfacing what we’ve been trying not to look at from now until 2044, the next two decades will be a reckoning with the choice we made centuries ago to allow the Earth to pay the price for humanity’s progress. The sky’s not punishing us, it’s just allowing us to meet consequence, and seeing what we’ll do.
As well as digging up what’s buried, Pluto in Aquarius shows up ever two and a half centuries to mark the transition from one age into the next. Nero's Rome burned when Pluto was in Aquarius. When the Church cracked open at the Great Schism, that was Pluto in Aquarius again. When the Reformation tore Christendom in half and the Bastille fell - Pluto in Aquarius, both times. Every two and a half centuries or so, right on cue, Pluto shows up in Aquarius to make mulch from the dying age out of which grows the next, and now it’s here again marking yet another transition.
The last pass saw us build machines that could do our muscles’ work for us as we entered the Age of the Mind, but now that age has reached its zenith and we’ve built machines that can do the work of the mind for us, we’re being freed to do what no machine can do - step into the realm of the heart. That’s what all this progress has brought us to - first we were freed to think, and now we’re being freed to feel, as the Age of the Mind gives way to the rising Age of the Heart.
Because the mind alone can’t solve the problem it created. If it could, we’d have solved it by now and the Northern Hemisphere wouldn’t be on fire. We’ve had all the facts for decades, and those facts haven’t moved us, because the mind can hold a fact without ever feeling it, and a fact we don’t feel will never move us to act.
Which is why - as Chiron in Taurus makes the wound of the Earth undeniable, and Pluto in Aquarius forces us to look at it - Uranus in Gemini has arrived to do something about it.
Uranus is the great disruptor that rewires whatever it moves through. Gemini is the sign of the mind and the last time Uranus moved through Gemini in the 1940s, it produced a fundamental restructuring of how humanity processes information; the first computers were born in wartime codebreaking rooms, television arrived in the living room, and the atomic bomb reshaped what information could do in an instant. Every visit of Uranus to Gemini rewires the collective mind at a structural level - not just new ideas flowing through the old channels, but the channels themselves rebuilt from the ground up.
Uranus has arrived back in Gemini just as we’ve constructed machines that can think, and it’s turned the dial up, flooding already-overloaded channels with more noise than the mind was built to hold, collapsing the certainty that somewhere in all that data there must be an answer, if we can only find it. That’s what Uranus in Gemini is here to do - rewire what the mind can trust - because a mind that has run out of answers is a mind that will finally listen to something deeper.
The mind was never going to reason its way to the heart, so Uranus in Gemini is doing what the mind can’t do for itself: wearing down its certainty until it becomes permeable, and pressing it up against the edge of what it can hold, not to break it, but to show it where the door is.
Uranus will work in Gemini until 2032, slowly, insistently reforming the mind until it can receive instruction from something it’s never quite trusted. The planet of rewiring, moving through the sign of thought, overloading it past the point where it can hold everything alone, until what holds it instead is the heart.
So just as the muscle once gave way to the mind, now the mind gives way to the heart - the mind ran up a bill it could never work out how to pay, so now the heart is what must rise to address it.

The End of Assumption
Both science and the sky agree that - now the wound is being made visible and the bill is coming due - there will be real loss over the coming years, and that’s something we will have to find a way to hold as we walk this path between worlds.
The summers will get longer and hotter until the hottest hours of the day are simply too dangerous for anyone who earns their living outdoors. Food we buy without thinking will sometimes just not be there, because the harvest failed somewhere we’ve never been. In some places - likely the poorest places - people will go hungry.
And closer to home - even harder to hold - the coast won’t always be where the map says it is. The houses some of us grew up in might become uninsurable, then uninhabitable. Coral reefs will thin and in places disappear entirely. Forests will burn. Species we never thought to say goodbye to will go without us getting the chance.
We mustn’t rush past this, because that’s what we’ve been doing for decades, trying to put off feeling what’s rising to be felt. There’s real grief in the moment we’re living through and the ones we’re about to walk into - real, personal grief, for a world we grew up in and assumed would outlast us. It turns out we got that the wrong way round…..
We are living through the end of the assumption that tomorrow will broadly resemble today - that the seasons will arrive roughly when they always have, that the coast is where the map always said it was, that the rain will come in autumn and the summer will eventually end. These are things we’ve never had to think about, because they’ve always been true. Losing that certainty, slowly and unevenly, across the years ahead, is the bill arriving, and paying it may feel like we’re going out of our minds, because we are.
Our minds like certainty and predictability, and without it, the mind will have to turn to the heart - to the deepest part of us that’s tethered to the deeper knowing, that can feel the harm done to the Earth as if it is harm done to the self, and that can feel the pain of another as acutely as if it’s its own. And from that place - anchored in the most expansive, most feeling part of us - we will find the solutions to the problems we’ve created, and those solutions will be the foundations upon which we build the new age.
The loss we will experience is not without purpose. When forests fell eons ago and went into the dark, under pressure, over time, they came out the other side as coal - the concentrated fuel that powered the entire industrial age. That same alchemy is at work now. All our old assumptions about the shape of the life we thought we’d have are going into the dark, because something has to come out the other side of that, concentrated, to power what comes next.
And what comes next, according to the sky, is far better than most of us can imagine. We can already see the glimmers of it now because the Age of the Mind, in its final act, already built the very toolkit the new age needs - it’s just been waiting for the heart to rise to implement it.

Here Comes the Sun
Since the turn of the century, steady investment in solar power has seen it now become the cheapest electricity human beings have ever produced - cheaper than coal, or anything else we’ve ever burned - and in April this year, for the first month in history, wind and solar together generated more electricity worldwide than gas did, in the middle of the energy crisis the Iran war set off, while fossil fuel markets were in chaos.
And the batteries that store all that sunshine have plummeted in price alongside the panels, which means round-the-clock clean power - the thing sceptics spent decades insisting was impossible - is being built out at record scale as we speak. Even in America, with everything Washington has done this year to torch the transition along with everything else, more than 95 per cent of the new capacity added to the US grid in the first quarter of this year came from clean sources. Meanwhile China has become the workshop of the new age, manufacturing solar panels, batteries and electric vehicles at prices that are dragging the whole world through the transition whether it votes for one or not. It’s not a perfect solution, but it’s a start - a strong step in the right direction, even if the toolkit still has costs of its own.
And as far as global emissions go, they grew by just 0.4 per cent last year - the slowest in four years - and China, the largest emitter on the planet, saw its emissions actually fall. Analysts are now arguing about whether the peak comes this year, or next, or whether we've already walked over it without noticing, which is remarkable considering that fifteen years ago the forecasts had us headed for civilisation-ending degrees of warming that have been quietly taken off the table by exactly this buildout. For the first time since Watt gave the engine its wheel, the curve is bending. We’re standing at the summit of the emissions mountain right now, and everything from here is the walk down.
Now, that’s not to say we won’t have to deal with the effects of the climate change that our past choices have caused, but quiet work is already underway there too. Cities from Ahmedabad to Athens have built heat action plans that have already slashed heatwave deaths, and the UN is racing to put early warning systems within reach of every human on Earth. Drought-tolerant crops are being bred, coastlines re-engineered, buildings redesigned to keep their occupants alive through the summers that are coming. None of it’s particularly glamorous, but all of it’s real.
Every tool we need already exists; what we’ve lacked isn’t the invention but the will - the felt urgency to deploy it all at full speed. That’s the missing ingredient the rising age supplies. The heart is what picks up the tools the mind built and puts them to work, and the mind in service of the heart is the most formidable instrument available to a human being.
The race of the next two decades is between the bending curve and the deepening wound, and it will be won one person at a time, as each of us lets ourselves actually feel what’s happening to the Earth, and is moved by that feeling into doing something about it.
The Shape of Things to Come
And while science offers us solutions to help us face this crisis, it’s the sky that maps exactly what the road ahead will look like as we walk from one age into the next.
With Uranus in Gemini until 2032, overloading the channels of the collective mind, the next six years will bring more of what we’ve been living through - more noise, more fury, more of the wound made visible as Chiron works its way through Taurus. But inside that pressure cooker, the sky has scheduled its mercies, and the first arrives next year, as the three great outer forces fall into harmony with each other and the chaos starts to cooperate; the overload stops merely battering us and starts pointing somewhere.
As we move into 2028, Saturn enters Taurus and meets Chiron there, ensuring we are building with the wound rather than around it. As we enter the 2030s, Saturn joins Uranus in Gemini for the final compression - structure itself entering the overloaded mind for the last and loudest years - and by 2032, they hold hands before crossing into Cancer, the sign of care, as the mind finally brings down the last of the walls it built to keep the heart out and steps over the threshold where the real building begins.
The last time Uranus made this crossing in 1948, what got built under that sky in the rubble of the Second World War was the world our grandparents handed us: Britain’s National Health Service, social housing across Western Europe, the pension and welfare systems, the whole post-war architecture of institutional care. After the world burned, the heart got its hands on the levers and built the first draft of a civilisation organised around looking after people. 2032 opens the second draft under the same sky, but with better tools, and more heart.
In 2033, Chiron finally leaves Taurus for Gemini, the sign of the mind - from the wound of the Earth, to the wound of the mind that made it. The instrument that ran the last age will need healing too - forgiveness, even - before it can fully take its new place in service of the heart.
In 2038, Neptune - the collective dream - enters Taurus, and the dream takes a body: imagination pouring into soil, food, energy, the material world itself reimagined. The last time Neptune moved through Taurus, in the 1870s and 80s, we dreamed electricity out of thin air and into the walls of our houses - the dream literally became infrastructure - and its return will likely do for regeneration what that visit did for electrification.
By 2044, Pluto finishes its long work surfacing what was buried in Aquarius and moves into Pisces, where it last travelled between 1797 and 1823, when it produced the Romantics - the poets and composers who rose up against the machine age at its birth and insisted that feeling was a way of knowing - and the abolition movement, the first time in modern history that feeling another’s suffering as your own became the law of nations. That was the heart as counterculture, a rebellion at the edges of the Age of the Mind. This time it arrives as the culture.
And by the early 2050s - science’s deadline for net zero - Saturn meets Pluto in Pisces; the two planets whose meeting in Capricorn cracked the old world’s foundations in January 2020 meet again three decades later in the sign of the ocean. By then Neptune will be moving through Gemini, gently dissolving the sign of the mind - not overloading it the way Uranus is now, but spiritualising it, washing the last residue of the old age back into the ocean it came from, until the membrane between the analytical and the transcendent is simply gone.
That’s the path from here to there, into the rising Age of the Heart.
The Distant Shore Beyond the Fire
But while the sky is clear about where we’re going, it’s also explicit about what gets left behind, and what cannot come with us on the journey.
The Age of the Heart doesn’t refreeze the glaciers or call the coastline back out of the sea - the Earth we hand to 2053 will be a changed Earth, after the bill we’ve been handed is paid. What changes is who we are inside it. A civilisation that feels what happens to its people and its planet - and is moved by that feeling into action - is a fundamentally different animal from one that could watch ten thousand people die in a heatwave and keep scrolling. The world ahead isn’t the world before the fires, but something we’ve never seen: a wounded Earth tended by a species that finally learned to feel it.
And the sky keeps going past the completion, if you want to peek. In 2065, Neptune enters Cancer, and the collective dream comes home to the sign of care - the first generation raised entirely inside the new age starting to dream its dreams. In 2066, Pluto enters Aries, and humanity begins its first brand-new 248-year story written from inside the Age of the Heart - the first fresh civilisational chapter since the one that gave us the steam engine. What that chapter holds is hard to read from here - just as nobody standing in 1781 could have imagined the world the mind would think up beyond the steam engine, nobody standing in 2026 can imagine the world the heart will feel into being.
But here’s what we can know for sure at this juncture; a child born this year - born into the smoke and the record heat we’ve spent this year walking through - will be six years old when the building begins, twenty-seven when the crossing completes, and forty when humanity starts writing that first new chapter in the heart’s sign. This isn’t a prophecy about distant descendants; most of us will see the turn with our own eyes, if not the full completion. But we’ll have to walk through the fire to get there, and there’s no version of that which doesn’t hurt. There’s a heaviness that comes with knowing that, and that heaviness should be honored, because it’s not a malfunction - it’s the correct response right now.
The years ahead will be all about letting go of the world we have loved but are now being asked to leave behind, as we set sail for something new. That’s a real loss - it doesn’t matter how extraordinary the world ahead of us may be just beyond the fire, letting go of what we’ve always known and of the certainty that came with it deserves to be grieved properly, and most of us have been very carefully not doing it.
We’ve been trying all the doors the mind knows to look for - the one marked “doom”, where nothing we do matters so why try anything anyway, and the one marked “denial” where the modelling’s all exaggerated and things will sort themselves out, or the one marked “distraction” where we just think of something more pleasant, or the one marked “blame” where we find a villain at which to aim our fury, because that’s so much easier to hold than fear. They look like different doors, but they all lead back to the same place, into the seeming-safety of the mind that’s reached the edge of what it can hold.
But the mind can’t take us where we’re going, and the only door it serves us to reach for now is the one that leads out into the wide expanse of the heart. As we reach the door at the limit of the mind, the perimeter is guarded by fear - it’s the mind’s way of keeping us safe from the feelings it’s been taught to be afraid of. It’s the mind’s warning signal, telling us we’ve reached the edge of the only room we were ever taught to live in, and when we feel that, it means we’re standing in precisely the right place.
The door is right there, and as we clutch the handle and turn, our only task is to feel all the feelings that come - the dread, the grief, the tight thing behind the sternum - without reaching for the thought that explains it, or the statistic that settles it, or the verdict that resolves it, or the outrage that converts it into something we can carry into an argument. Just hold there in the feeling, and find where it lives in the body. The chest, the throat, the belly - it will have a place. Turn all attention there and breathe into it rather than away from it - we don’t need to name it, or fix it or even understand it, just feel it and let it be there entirely, without turning it into noise, even when it feels like the worst possible idea, even when all we want to do is stand up and do something else.
Stay there anyway.
Because what happens, if we can hold it long enough, is that the wall begins to thin and the door begins to open. The fear doesn’t disappear - it changes character. And on the other side of it there’s something older and steadier than fear: grief, and love, and a kind of knowing the mind simply can’t reach from inside the room. A sense of being held by something considerably larger than the problem.
That’s the heart. It’s larger than the mind by orders of magnitude and it was built for exactly this terrain. It can hold the loss of the reefs and the fear for our children’s futures and the fury at the people who knew and did nothing, all at once, without needing to convert any of it into a verdict. And when we can feel it, something else happens that no amount of information has ever managed.
We move.
And that’s the whole of it. We’ve had the facts for decades and they’ve hardly moved us, because a fact we don’t feel is just a thing that we know. But a person who has actually let themselves feel what is happening to the Earth cannot go back to not caring, and will do something, and it may only be a small thing, and small things are what this is made of.
Friends, we are not walking towards our doom but towards something better than what we have now, and the only road there goes directly through the fire, not around it. But the fire isn’t the destination - it’s the passage. The age that’s coming doesn’t need us to cross perfectly, or bravely, or all at once. It doesn’t need us to have answers or a plan. It just needs enough of us to keep finding our way back to the door - one person at a time, choosing to feel rather than flee.
That’s how the Age of the Heart rises.
